why sexist ? are you female ?

I do appologise to you, you are probably a very responsible and safe driver.

I tried using difflocks on a 26tonne mixer. Definitely gave it titanic style steering. Did once leave me up to my axles in soft mud though, when I’d used them to try and cross a wet site to tip… Needed a tow out of that.

Thats why you don’t use your diff-lock untill you need to. When you arrive on-site for the first time, have a check of the ground you’ll be driving over. If it looks a bit soft and you think you are likely to get stuck, don’t go on it. If it looks OK, you drive on with the diff-lock out (diffs free), if you then start to bog in, put your diff lock in and hopefully drive out of trouble.

I started driving on farm tractors, at 13 years old. At 20 I joined the army as a Combat (ie cross country) Driver, I did that for 12 years. Got stuck or bogged in plenty of times, but common sense (to me) says diff-lock in when you drive on-site will almost always get you into deeper trouble, which you can do nothing about, than driving on with diff-lock out but ready to go in, to get you out of trouble

Use your diff locks to get you out…

No-one told me that until AFTER I’d bogged a loaded 26 tonner into the mud…

Not only ensure level ground for tipping but hard standingtoo. Imposing all that weight at the rear can lead to soil giving way with obvious result. Also please check in between the twin rear wheels before leaving a site and returning to the highway, bricks lodged there can inadvertently end up ‘fired’ through the windscreen of vehicles behind.

Sorry, Pat, just having a laugh really, although you did offend us law-abiding, responsible ‘bulk hauliers’! And no i’m not female (at least not last time i looked), the sexist thing came about from you apologising to Alli but not to me! Like i said mate, no hard feelings, just having a laugh  Apology accepted, best wishes, Simon (as opposed to Simone).

Do you need a special license to drive a tipper■■?

Reason i ask is i have just been looking on the job centre website and there was an advert this job:

Must be aged 25+ for insurance purposes and must have a current (UK) class 2 tipper licence. Duties include delivering tarmac and stone to commercial, industrial and residential properties in the Manchester area. Wage will be approximately £320 plus overtime per week.

cheers simon

simon, all your need is a ‘C’ licence, and to be over 25 for some strange reason!

paul

Cheers paul
think i’ll go try and blag myself a new job.

now how do these tippers work■■? :open_mouth:

simon

You get loaded on the flat, then you open up the back end (either by getting out and undoing it, or some have a remote control in the cab), then you lift it up until it all falls out…

Items to watch for: Reasnably level ground when you tip. If there has to be a slope, tip up or down it, not across it.
Watch out for low power lines.
Ensure you do the back up when you’re done tipping.
Take it easy on sites, and be wary about overloading.
A Diff lock is to get you OUT of trouble only.

Thanks for the replies people and pm’s if i need anymore info i know where to ask.

thanks again
simon

Alli, I was taught that a difflock was to prevent you getting into trouble, engage before you get stuck.
OK, this was on 4wd landrovers, but I would have thought the principle would be the same.

Always used to engage the diff lock on landfill sites before getting stuck

You need a certificate from a mental institute to say you are sane. I have yet to meet a tipper driver who was not a wreckless maniac with no regard for any other road user .

:imp: Excuse me. I am a tipper driver and am not only perfectly sane (ok well maybe not  ) but run perfectly legal at all times. My company does not approve of anything dodgy. If you cant do it legally the y wont do it! If i cant make a delivery they just say well tip it tomorrow then. Apologies will be accepted.

A couple of points worth noting for anyone who is not used to difflocks

Only leave the difflock engaged long enough to get yourself out of trouble, make sure it is disengaged before going out on the road.

Diffs have a terrible habit of blowing up if the lock is left on when you drive at speed .

When the difflock is engaged the truck will not turn very well.

On most six or eight wheel tippers there are two difflocks and two switches.

One will be marked difflock, this is the one to use first, the second may well be marked crosslock this is either another switch on the dash as in Daf 85’s or can be a push button near the gearstick.

Only use the crosslock if you are still struggling with the difflock engaged.

cheers
STEVE.
