A few months out of haulage and I tried this for a living, around 1972 (hence poor pic) Varied work, always something interesting to do. This pic was using the machine to launch clay pigeons at a charity do in Richmond, North Yorks. Sadly the company, Air Platforms, didn’t last long for one reason or another. The machine is a 40 ft lift with a TV cage on, normally used for Golf Tournaments etc.
I sat on the side of the M5 waiting for a tyre fitter for half a day in 1974 and decided there and then that unless I got out of road transport I would end up with a class 1 and be stuck with it for the rest of my life. I enjoyed making things so became a welder and stayed at it - and travelled the world. Jim. ( now 68 and retired happily - except for a cancer hiccup leading to a colostomy but OK now)
After spending what seemed light years running both north and south on the M6 on nights, days, tramping and roaming,I decided,as good as an employer that SoM were, enough was enough.
In late 80’s I put my self through a C and G plumbing course, became qualified, and after 3 years employed half a dozen guys doing the same work.
Best decision I have ever made, being a truck driver wasn’t going to get me what I wanted out of life for me and my family, now very contentedly retired in Portugal, lapping up the expat lifestyle.
