My most memorable weekend has to be the Monaco Grand prix around a year before we changed to the €, I just pulled up on the services above Monaco for a 45 as I was heading for Milan to reload on the Monday and heard all the noise, admittedly I should have realised the GP was on that weekend as the Auto-route was overloaded with some top spec sports cars. Anyway, to cut a long story short I phoned the boss to find out what time I was meant to be loading and he said Tuesday morning so I stayed where I was, Friday night I walked down into the town and found the most expensive bar in the world and got a little wobbly making friends with a couple of Aussies who lived in the town, they suggested I meet up with them the next day in the same bar as the TV would be showing all the practice and the local English language radio would be played for commentary.
I decided to call it a night quite early as my money was going to be running out pretty fast at ff70 for a small beer. Being unable to get a cab back to the truck I spent what seemed like an hour climbing back up the hill to my truck, but a price worth paying I thought.
The next morning I wondered back down the hill to the same bar and met up with my newly found Aussie friends and they were sitting with an American who was just in town for the race, he had to stay in Nice as this year’s the prices were a little keen for him in Monaco, he was still paying FF8,000 a night for his room in Nice but seemed to think that was reasonable
His wife was apparently in town shopping so he asked me if I wanted to use her seat on Casino curve for the qualifying. What a result, so come the afternoons practice I found myself overlooking the track, not bad for my first GP. He also offered my his wife’s seat for the race day if she decided not to watch (she often didn’t) but as they were in France and all the shops shut on a Sunday she had nothing better to do and went to the race. I still watched it, but from inside the bar I first went to I think it was called the English Rose, but can’t swear to that, even not being on the stands the atmosphere was fantastic, you could smell the fumes from the cars, feel the vibration from the engines and it was as good as I was ever going to get. Over all I must have spent nearly £100 over the weekend, but it was worth every penny.
Apart from that weekend being that I was doing removals for about 12 years I got to see many cities, often parking in the center of town for days at a time, some of the best were in no particular order.
Germany.
Sindelfingen, I went there to visit the Mercedes factory but as luck would have it there was an international strasse festival there that weekend.
Koln, I just love the bars and the people there, my favorite bar in Germany has to be Papa Joe’s.
Sinsheim, The Autohof is pretty good, but it is the museum down the road that I really like
Berlin, just everything about it is good, parking at the Avus Autohof is free and the beer and food very cheap, 5 minutes walk finds you at the nearest S-Bahn which gets you into one of the liveliest Citys in Europe. I always start at an Irish bar in Hackescher Markt right under the S-Bahn station and just see where the night or day takes me.
Hamburg. I never did find the Reeperbahn
Munich, Yes I made it there for the Oktober fest.
Slipping across the border into Austria is very similar to Germany in hospitality and reasonable prices as long as you pick your restaurants and bars carefully
Switzerland. This can be a little more expensive, but I have had some great weekend in the main Cities, probably the most memorable was the Langstrasse festival although I have had many good weekends in other parts of Swiss.
Spain, I’ve done nearly all of Spain, all the costa’s all the big Cities and most of the smaller ones as well, my favorite for no special reason other than I had a couple of great weekends there was a place called Pontevedra, an old town with a vibrant atmosphere, just over the border in Portugal is another great weekend for site seeing in Valença
And whilst in Portugal, both Oporto and Lisboa are well worth a visit with a camera. The Algarve is good for the beeches and night life.
I could go on but I’m sure you get the drift. The only thing I miss about not trucking any more are the fantastic weekend I have had all over Europe. I can honestly say that I have not found any nation to be inhospitable apart from kosovo just after the war but the people may well not have been Kosovens, and the only time I haven’t liked it in any country is on the odd occasion I have been in a truck stop when the Brits have been playing up, although I have also had some brilliant times parked up with Brits.
