HI you all!!
I understand your concerns over the amount of forums, it is something we regularly discuss, we do remove forums that are underused, 1 has gone since Xmas an no-one noticed
But there are reasons why we have so many forums
- 100’s of messages are posted on here each week with fewer forums many of these would quickly “Fall Off” the front pages and not be read and get the responses they deserve
- Many topic titles are not indicative of its content, by placing the post in a specialised forum the info/discussion is easier to find
- Many members only call in a couple of times a week, a huge long list of new topics in a few forums can be daunting, having less new topics in more forums enables members to more easily choose which they wish to read
- Some subjects are of little or no interest to some members, having topics in their own forums enables members to easily pick out want they want to read and avoid forums that are of no interest
- Many more people use these forums to read/research than post, specific forums make it easier to obtain the specialised information they are looking for and also encourages them to use the forums to ask questions and join in, in a few large forums this could be daunting, and the questions could easily be lost amongst a myriad of other posts
- From a site administration point of view it is far easier to have more smaller forums that specific people can keep an eye on than a few large ones, this ensures that inappropriate content is kept off the site
- From a business point of view, specific forums allow us to market the site more positively to advertisers, allowing us to give detailed statistics on a companies area, and allowing that advertising to be targeted to their client group
In any ways the amount of forums are a tribute to the users of this site, and the huge amount of information that they place upon it. Too few forums make it difficult to extract the information visitors are looking for, Too many makes the site unwieldy, it is a balancing act that we constantly review, We are experimenting with the next version of this PHP board, which hasn’t been released yet … this allows sub forums and sub categories which will make the forum list less daunting, however this version is still in the “ALPHA” stage of development and we do not want to risk using it until at least a “BETA” stable version is released.
In Summary…
Yes the forum list is long, but reducing the amount of forums will not decrease the amount of topics posted, but will make it far more difficult for members to choose which posts they wish to read, It will also make it more difficult for those researching specific areas. It may be that if the newer version of PHP is not suitable we have to look at having separate boards for different areas, linked from a main sub menu, but at present the amount of topics posted do not justify that expense.
Blimey! It’s been moved already!
This is a subject which belongs on the main forum, not one which should be shunted into the sidings.
For the reasons posted above… it belongs in here
Those who wish to discuss how this site works and possible improvements/criticisms will come to the feedback forum and tell us their point of view, those NOT interested will read general topics relating to the transport industry and drivers in the PDF and not mistakenly read this topic that they have no interest in by mistake
I’m trying to help you Rikki. I’m trying to make TruckNet better.
Still, if you don’t want it to be discussed, then it’s your website
I know you are Vince, and everyone else, your input is appreciated and read, and more importantly discussed, … if we didn’t want it discussed we wouldn’t have this feedback forum, and we would delete all posts that in any way criticised this site…
