The village pepole with a speed gun

We have them round our way with a sort lollipop type electric sign linked to the gun that displays your speed and a smiley face to the driver, if you are under the speed limit by 3 mph or more.

I don’t mind them, they can waste their time on whatever they feel is important. I’m ■■■■ sure I will when I’m coffin-able age. It probably won’t be conducting road speed surveys, but who knows?!

What does wind me up is at my local one there is a lady of a certain age, at least 108, who wags her finger at me when I go past dead on the 30. She obviously likes to see a smiley face on her lollipop! It’s like getting an overspeed infringement for going over 56 on a motorway but staying under 60. Irritating.

a couple of days a week and a similar group are about in Stansted Mountfitchet.

On my car I have a specially adjusted rear screenwash nozzle for situations like that.

Speed enforcement is the job of the police.

What would you rather have? A couple of old dears playing traffic cop or a SCAMERA van?

If you ask me these Community Speed Watch schemes work for everyone. Drivers because it means a second chance if ‘caught’, locals because some speed enforcement is better than non, the old folk because they have something to do & the police because these volunteers save them money.

There is an eccentric old ex Milatary retired officer that stands in the road and stops nasty killer juggernaut killer trucks who speed through the village he OWNS.
He uses a hair dryer as a speed gun.Not a wind up.

Please tell me they where standing outside the YMCA…

Young man, there’s no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you’re in a new town
There’s no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there’s a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you’re short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I’m sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

A lot of small villages have no shop ,post office or pub so there are no pedestrians as there is nowhere to walk to.They still have the 30 mph signs though.I dont think that I am being anti social driving through those places at about 40 mph.A vehicle doing 30 mph would be in a lower gear making more noise and kicking out more pollutants ,is that what the old gits want?

I read the thread title and thought :open_mouth:

I don’t suppose that you would like to tell the class where exactly you got that obviously well worn LP from?

beetee07:
This makes me laugh your all calling them coffin dodgers! What’s the average age of HGV drivers 50+.
I include myself in that age and I’m no coffin dodger.

Doesn’t the fact that we’re alive make us all coffin dodgers.

A little know fact about that photo
is that in the original the electrician
had a real driver in his mouth.

na  na

I suppose we are but a coffin dodger to me is someone on their last legs.

If their out with a speed gun I don’t think they are on the way out just yet[WINKING FACE]

It is people like you that help to get us all a bad name.Drivers are not capable of deciding that the speed limits are wrong and it is safe to go faster because there are no shops etc.
All villages have residents(children included) who are entitled to vehicles driving through at the posted speed limit for their safety.
Also you theory about driving faster is total bollox… :unamused:

Seems like some do not like the thought of people recording their speed. Some nasty comments from the usual suspects.
They might have a different attitude if one of their family gets mowed down by a speeding vehicle.
30 limits are usually in built up areas where there is a high risk of pedestrians crossing the road and anyone who breaks the limit deserves all they get especially so called professional drivers.

Speed enforcement is the job of the police, no different to the prats who’ll overtake a hgv and then drive at 40 to make sure they’re doing no more than the limit. Same as the SAGA Louts in Bradford on Avon with their pathetic “Lorry Watch”. In fact it’s no different to Neighbourhood Watch; Just bored people who think they’re slightly more important than they are, wanting to intervene in other peoples’ lives. I bet they’re the same boring prats who sit beside roads, doing traffic surveys. Just to earn a bit more money to spend at a National Trust property or to put their Rover 25 through it’s next mot.

Yes it is the police who give out the speeding tickets but residents are quite entitled to complain and try to stop vehicles speeding through their villages. The speed limit is the law.It is the drivers who break it that are the prats.
First time I have heard of someone complaining about n/hood watch.Maybe your a part time burglar!
What planet are you on?.. :unamused:

Although small villages may have shops and ammenities tucked up little side roads that may not be visible from the main road I can see your logic here.
I’m slightly more considerate and like to hit the village outer 30mph marker on the limiter then lift and coast through the village.

This works best if the village is on a slight gradient but I find using this method my emmisions and noise pollution make such a low impact that the villagers recognise my considerate driving and often wave at me as I fly past.

:open_mouth: 40 in a village with a 30 limit?
Maybe there WAS a useful fact on a recent DCPC course: was told that in an 44t artic it is generally 30m stopping distance, give or take 5m depending on suspension system. So basically two vehicle lengths at 40 mph (assuming 16.5m rig).

If that is true (is it?) then I think 40 is too fast. Only wants an old dear to confidently back out of her drive in front of you and you have no chance.

If you were really considerate, there’d be NO limiter, and then you could go faster and roll further, reducing the chance that you’d have to touch the throttle.

They do it the village where I live ,
the volunteers are trained by the police and not just in speed checks but also for clocking people on mobile phones , as the village now has a weight limit then they monitor that and report anyone rat running in a truck,
