To be fair it all kicked off a bit before that with Russians supporting the Arabs and arming them to the teeth in an attempt to invade Israel and massacre its inhabitants.
Then the west armed the Iranians and the Saudis to the teeth resulting in a massive war between Iran and Russian armed Iraq after the Iranian Islamic revolution.The result being that both Iran and Saudi turned on its US backers in the form of official state sponsored aggression in the case of Iran and unofficial non state sponsored Islamic aggression in the case of Saudi.
The big question at that point being why didn’t America disarm both Iran and Saudi together with the rest of the Islamic world using a strategy of whatever it takes including the threat of nuclear attack instead of the limited specific actions in Iraq.
In addition to the question why has China been the biggest beneficiary of the US action in Iraq.
