The standard of driving in the USA

Why are drivers here so appaulingly distracted and get away with it, whereas anywhere else they would be picked up and ticketed
Drivers swerve and sway from lane to lane or on to the shoulder while they talk on a mobile on read a map, or just don’t read signs until it is too late. A big example is at toll booths where there are signs for 2 miles telling them what lane to be in for cash, cars only or ez-pass, yet every day I follow at least one idiot right up to the ez-pass section before the realise they are in the wrong lane, have to reverse out causing chaos, then move to anothe line, and it’s not just car drivers who are stupid. Last week I was nearing the tolls at the west / NY end of the Mass Pike to enter, I was following a truck with Ohio plates, he slowed up to the 45mph limit for the booths, passed at least 3 signs saying “EZ-PASS KEEP RIGHT” and “CARS ONLY” and “OTHER TRAFFIC KEEP LEFT” he slowed to a crawl and stayed in the middle, I moved to the right to ez-pass / fast lane and watched him drive right in ton the cars only lane which had a very large red sign across that was only about 11 foot off the ground, his truck destroyed the sign so he drove even slower up to the booth. I drove off at speed laughing, where the hell do they find these guys
Next day at the same toll booth but comming back the other way I aproached th booths to find a huge line of vehicles, some idioy with an F250 pick up truck pulling a 30 foot camper had got right to the ez-pass section then realised he didn’t have ez-pass, so he baced off, turned to his left, then realised he couldn’t turn into the correct booth because he had a trailer on, so he blocked all the other toll booths for the huge line waiting and could go nowhere

Cranal ■■■■ Dyslexia is the most common condition which affects American Drivers, Pat.
Time and time again I am cut-off, flipped-off and generally p*ssed-off, by inconsiderate idiots who have somehow have managed to obtain a driver’s licence.
As you know, I drive a Tour-Bus, as opposed to a truck, but, it seems to be a magnet for the idiots. As I approach off-ramps, I always check my left mirror and hit the power if I see someone about to pass me…for fear of them cutting across my bows heading for the off-ramp!
Our company has now started to fit “DriveCam” video cameras to our vehicles drivecam.com This small type of video-camera is activated when there is a sudden change in vehicle activity (hard-braking, swerving etc). Unfortunately, it also acts as “Big Brother” as it also films the inside, thanks to the dual-lens.
The cops should be aggressive in targeting aggressive-drivers, as opposed to picking people off for going 5mph over the speed-limit on a deserted interstate.
Cheers & Beers!
Jim.

The drivers that anoy me most on entrance ramps are the ones who stop at the bottom and look back before creeping out into 65mph traffic causing total chaos

I like the thread title, but what standards?.. I did’nt know they had any :unamused:

 Hi guys…My names Ivan and I am new to this site. Been in Transport 14 years and currently a Transport supervisor at the mo, after driving for various transporter companies.
Are drivers really that bad in the Us■■?
Me and a friend are about to embark to the Usa to work on the harvest in Texas/Kansas. Do you guy’s know anything about this?
Any comments would be appreciated…

Not much worse than in the UK right now from what I saw touring over there a couple years back.

I personaly don’t know much about the harvest work. Some people on here have had experience on the job and seemed to like it. If you just want to do it for the experience then thats up to you, go ahead and enjoy yourselves. I however would be a bit sceptical as to why no American drivers or owner/ operaters are doing it, poor pay and conditions soon come to mind.

From what i have heard they will put you through your CDL A which is worth something. Be prepared to drive a70 foot long truck, probably touching or over the top weight at over 70 mph alongside crazy drivers

Actually Alikat they are alot worse than in the UK, granted, the UK driving habits have taken a nosedive since I last drove over there for a living, but they still have a long, long way to go down before they reach the level of the Septics!

I’ve been the UK and I’ve seen how they drive over there… give me a break.

Could you say they are both equal?.. Just to make it fair?

OK Karl… I’ll agree with that. There are idiots on roadways everywhere. The biggest annoyance here, (which I’m pretty sure Pat will agree with) are the blue-hairs that can’t drive faster than 25 mph if their lives depended on it. They constantly block the roads off and hold traffic up for miles. Seems the UK has the opposite problem… they can’t drive fast enough over there… holding the cell phone with one hand and using the other to gesture as they talk … like the guy on the other end of the phone can see them, hahaha… scarey! I’ve only ever driven there once… and that was with Pat, half past out drunk in the passenger seat trying to give me directions on where to go… as if his accent wasn’t hard enough to understand at the time, lets add drunken slurs to it. hahahaha… gotta love him! Now when we go, I’m satisfied to sit in the passenger seat… and try to keep my eyes closed… its almost like a carnival ride that way (though not recommended when ya have morning sickness :open_mouth: )

Pat, I remember back in the 60’s when drivers were professionals. Our neighbour next door in Boulder CO drove a twin-steer drom unit for P.I.E., and he used to go to work every day wearing a shirt, tie, and cap!

Seriously, at least once a month there is some moron from a big western-based company going through the EZ-Pass lane without the proper unit, blocking traffic up and generally annoying everybody behind him.

One of the things about commercial drivers today is that so many of them drive as if they are the only vehicle on the road. Just the other day, a driver from one of the big national companies pulled up next to my car while we were stopped at a light. I was in the right of 2 left-turn lanes, and this guy (with a 53" trailer, I might add) somehow thought he could do the turn fron the left lane. He even forced a car to stop dead halfway through the turn as he slopped over. Just to make things worse, there was a steep uphill just after the turn, and he was clawing up it at 10 mph in the left lane. Sheesh!

Four wheelers drive me up the wall. They are bad all over especially in FL. They can’t read the road and cut you off.
Truckers, by and large are pretty good in the US. Yes, you get an odd one thats a bit of a plonker, but I think the 18 wheeler guy is good. :unamused:

I wonder how many of those four wheelers are driven by off duty 18 wheeler drivers

I think Vermont has the worst drivers, for some reason you can take any driver from any state, stick him in a car or pick up and put green plates on it and it has the imediate effect of turning him or her into a blind, stupid selfish and doddery old git that sits at well bellow the limit and always slows up infront of a 40ton truck as he is nearing a steep moutain climb, or on the decending side on a 1 in 5 down grade stops right infront of you to turn left and even though no other car is insight still stops to check the far horizon without a care in the world or a thought that if your brakes fail he will be flattened in an instant, then when you get past him and get up to 50 or so again, some other idiot pulls out right infront because “trucks dont’ go very fast” and sits there at 30 mph ready for the next mountain climb.

I really hate Vermont drivers, do even have a driving test

Had another lousy driver almost run my car into the centre divider today on the NYS Thruway! It was a Hoovestal mail carrier (running the Detroit-Springfield run, according to the trailer). He just pulls out, even though I was passing him at the time.

Should I even ask if the average will go up or down when I eventually get my CDL■■?

It’ll prolly go up being that you are from the UK, cos they’re aren’t any decent drivers in the US…lol

Tin Hat ready…lmao
