The road to passing Class 2 - my timeline

Hi everyone, not posted much on here, but after passing my Class 2 test today I thought I would share my experience of my road to passing from start to finish.

5th August - made first visit to Peter Smythe’s to make enquiries - what does it entail, costs etc
Signed up to Starter Pack to cover CPC Module 1 and 2 & Medical
7th August - Medical
9th August - Sent provisional License off (Recorded Delivery)
13th August - Apply online for Digital Tacho Card
14th August - Digital Tacho Card added to my Driving License detail on Gov.UK
17th August - Receive Digital Tacho Card through post
23rd August - Receive license back through post with provisional C added
Phone call to PSTT to book theory and Hazard Perception tests - both booked for 28th August
28th August - Pass both Theory (95%) and Hazard Perception tests (88%) - CPC Module 1 done
Find out that CPC Module 2 - Case Studies cannot be booked online and have to ring DVSA test centre to get
authorisation to book - get authorisation back within a few days.
1st September - Visit to PSTT to book Case Studies and driving lessons. Then what seems like a long wait…
7th October - Pass CPC Module 2 - Case Studies (45/50) - CPC Module 2 done
Phone PSTT to book CPC Module 4
19th October - 22nd October - 4 x 3.5 hours Class 2 driving lessons
Also do training for CPC Module 4 before lesson
21st October - Pass CPC Module 4 (100%) before 3rd driving lesson
25th October - Pass Class 2 Driving Test (2 minor faults) - CPC Module 3 done

My driving license has been sent off and I can’t book Class 1 lessons until I get it back, but there is quite a waiting list and is not expected to be this side of New Year.

I’m working at the moment in a job that I am comfortable in, and wonder what my next step should be - I have a brand new qualification and I’m not really sure what to do with it

At this time of year, and as a new pass, would you go for agency work to get a variety of work under your belt, or start applying for jobs (or both?!)

I hope this gives those starting out an idea of the timeframes that could be involved in passing your test from start to finish.

Any advice or recommendations appreciated in advance - BTW I live in Mansfield so any inside info on job availability is also appreciated.

Cheers

That’s pretty quick. Well done on your Class 2 pass! I’ve got mine on Wednesday

Good luck

Also forgot to add my thanks to everyone at PSTT who helped guide me through the whole thing, especially Nick my instructor who showed incredible faith in me from day one.

Nice one, I did Mod 4 on the 21st and training with Nick 19th-22nd with the test today as well, we passed like ships in the night.

Ha, you must have been on the early shift.

I would apply to reputable companies and see if you get any offers. At the moment they are desperate for drivers, I doubt the job market will be as good after Xmas. Try and find a company that has artics so you can move on to them when qualified. Working directly for a decent company you will get more initial support than with an agency who will just expect you to get on with it. I applied for a few jobs driving 7.5t with well known national companies not expecting to get anywhere but was offered a job in a couple of days. I have just completed a week of paid training including a couple of days out on the road with another driver. The experience has been invaluable and I now feel really confident about starting driving.

Yep half 7 crew represent.

As for your question, I suppose it depends on personal circumstances. Personally I’ve got a couple of things I’ve got my eye on which pay much more than I’m on now, the plan being that I’d get Class 2 done and get doing something before going for CE, and then I’d be better off financially than if I’d waited for the changes. The ideal scenario is getting in somewhere full time and with any luck they might support my Class 1.

Sounds like Nick has had a good day today too
