The reality of getting work as a new driver

^^^^ Spot on. Good luck to you alder! :sunglasses:

Thanks mate  I donā€™t know if anyone else has noticed but there are loads of HGV Jobs being advertised here in West Yorkshire and my brother is in Darlington and he says there are a lot up there as well. Let the good times roll

BTW my brother has been driving 36 years and is on here as cheekymonkey. He says he is being offered bonuses now to do supermarket runs so there must be a shortage in the north east?

[/quote]
Not really a shortage here in the north east but there are some jobs around if you look

Nobody want to do supermarket work & tbh a lot are now offering some kind of bonus

you have a better chance of getting blood from a stone trust me Iv held my Cat C since last year and had the door slammed in my face repeatedly from both agencies and companies a like

last Monday was no exception I went out for what I thought was a all day trial but it was more like a 10 minuet driver around the Block in a nice looking Daf with a Automatic Gear box (never drove a Auto before) got told by the assessor that I was green explained to him that it was my first time at the wheel since last october long story short
was promised work starting this monday called em up on the before Friday to find what the crack was got told I would be suitable for one of there 7.5 tonersā€¦ I ok with that but I then told to wait by the phone cause thay had nothing for meā€¦ hell 7 + months Iv been out of work now upto my eyeballs in debt and my first real chance of work looks like its another of those ones that exist in Narnia

all I can say is thanks mister Richards :frowning:

For my own personal experience I wrote over 100 letters to every company I could think of and got 3 replies in total I got knocked back by all of them,

Then I was very lucky I got a in 7 days after passing my test and havenā€™t been out of work yet, work through the ā– ā– ā– ā–  learn as you go and learn from mistakes,
Donā€™t be afraid to say I donā€™t know and always ask,
You will get mocked and laughed at but be the bigger man / woman,

Within 2 years I was working in the touring industry driving Europe and soon after moved up into music and live event touring,

A lot of which came from connections I made along the way.

99% of it is luck 1% hard work
Once you get a Job I would say it reverses 99% hard work 1% luck

I start with them on Monday, tramping. Good luck trying to find something though. Itā€™s taken me a good while to get this one.

Get your C and some ALLMI (HIAB) tickets you can do various lorry mounted crane courses for each attachment-auger-clamshell-brick grab-hook-then up grade to unlimited and each course can contain a cpc 7 hour module so you get all your 35hours for free.
Now you have your cpc and 5 ALLMI tickets. Then you can tell your local agencies-into the fracas you will goā€¦

I would stick with rigid work forget the artic aspect until you have ridgid figured out. Artic work is really rather boring. Ridgids are harder work-thus more interesting.
Search this forum with ā€œagencyā€ and read all those posts and you will be as prepared as possible for the rollercoaster ride of becoming a lorryist.

Goog Luck

I am on nightshift 5pm - 10pm but paid 8 hours 10.60 per hour and driving this ā€¦

alder:
But the industry is awash with drivers whoā€¦

  • have a very negative attitude which is bad for the clients customers
  • wonā€™t get up in the morning and fail to turn up
  • take days off when it is sunny
  • wonā€™t pay for their own cpc training
  • drink or take drugs (very common)
  • speed, donā€™t do checks, regular tacho infringements which is a risk to the company as their operators licence states ā€œthey must control dirversā€
  • wonā€™t work nights, weekends or spend nights out leaving scope for you to enter the market
  • canā€™t reverse and get their trailer into tight parking areas shops, bays etc.
  • wonā€™t be flexible example help a customer by working late one evening etc.

Hope this helps. This is the attitude I have and think I may get work after I have passed my class 1

Never a truer word said.

If youā€™ve got a good block on your shoulders and a good attitude, once your foot is in the door, they wonā€™t want to show you out!

Based on personal experience too, until recently that is!

Iā€™m still struggling to get permanent due to my different full time job, as I canā€™t go knocking doors easily with my own work times! However if I had the time, thatā€™s what I would be doing everyday (so many success stories on here throughout history) and I am pretty sure you would find a job to get you started very soon.

It might not be the blue eyed boys jobs of sitting on your arse all day just driving and nothing else, but itā€™ll pay ok to start as you work your way up and through the sectors that interest you. Once you get your contacts, say from here, it will get even easier.

And yes I do believe that, before I get mocked by others!

Best of luck OP and yourself Alder.

Depends what part of the country you are mate.

You normally find that the oneā€™s that brag about a start a few weeks after passing are on trial ā€œbut they wonā€™t tell you thatā€.

I was a forktruck driver with no licence or experience, a year on my gaffers put me through both licences and stuck me out on the roadā€¦ 10 years later and Im still with the same firm and have had offers of jobs from 3 different firms.
Its all about luck and networking, get to know a few people who may be able to help you out in the future.
If you can work your way in by starting off sweeping a yard or washing wagons then go for it, being too proud to do a ā– ā– ā– ā–  job doesnt pay off in this game.

Thank you Constantine

Everyone is always on trial. If you are agency and you donā€™t follow any of the safety procedures or drive like a lunatic the company/client will be straight on the blower and tell the agency not to send you again. My brother got that treatment from poundland for using the shunt button :open_mouth: If you work direct for them in any job role you are on trial anyway for 6 months but these days firms can sack you within 2 years and you have no rights.

Never done agency - and have no interest in doing so.

Just wanted to give balanced view for the new passes as they might think that every start was a FTP

True its a balanced view, but Iā€™d have thought a trial period would have been obvious to all?

Like Alder said, you are practically on trial every time you go out in a motor regardless of whether you are agency or full time. Saying that you are on probabtion in nearly every possible job you could do in the UK for a period of time from 1 month to say 2-3 years!

You zb up badly enough, you will be shown the door. Not many companies can underwrite the risk if you are reckless regardless of industry.

And rightfully said you can be sacked quite easily within the first 2 years and then easily thereafter when you view the gross misconduct terms in your contract that you can possibly break. I think people forget that sometimes, you ainā€™t owed a job, you have to keep earning your position and helping the company to pay for it too! :open_mouth:

Hahahahahaha thatā€™s what my old man says to me and youā€™ll only be remembered for ā– ā– ā– ā–  ups, never for when you went beyond the call of duty to help people out other times! :unamused:
