The price of Michelin tyres

How many operators think Michelin tyres are overpriced nowadays
we operate an all Michelin fleet but we are having second thoughts

I think it so depends on what you are on with or where you are travelling. If I was never to leave a tarmac road it would be mich all the way. Unfortunately I spend a lot of time off road on landfill/recycling sites and rebar does differentiate between a Michelin or a cheap as chips Chinese version. That last 295 steer I had fitted was (don’t laugh) a double happiness at £188, so far no problems.

Out of interest how much are you paying for michelins? I use Bridgestone which have cost me £309 for M729 drives, £325 for M748 SS and just bought some R297 front steers for £305. The unit tyres are 315/70’s.

We have just been quoted £425 for Michelin steer tyres and £340 for Michelin remix drive tyres
as against Bridgestone steer at £350 and drives at £240

I used to be 100% Michelin up to about 4 years ago. They were always £20 or so more than Bridgestone or conti, but they just spiralled up until they were £100 or so more than the competition. I ten started trying conti and Bridgestone and found the conti tyres got the same mileage on the steers and not far off the same on the drives so p per mile it’s a no brainer to use conti.
I am still using mich on the trailer when I can get them at the right price, and I am trying some of the stupidly named steer tyres “x multi way 3d xze” or whatever they’re called on a couple of steering axles.

Michelin do seem to be struggling to sell their tyres in my opinion. Hence the advertising on this forum.

We started looking at making our fleet all=Mich thanks to the price/quality of XDE remix’s and taurus trailer and ‘U’ pattern tyres, the only sticking point was the price of steer tyres.

Seeing as we don’t buy too many steer tyres (average annual mileage is 50,000km) we decided to go with the bit extra cost on steers for the sake of commonality, casings, etc.

Never had any complaints with a Mich steer, they don’t seem to shoulder off like Bridgestones.

Recently fitted a Taurus steer tyre, rather than a Mich (the lorry was being disposed of soon after) on a 315/710 x 22.5 - looked good for the money, would try one again.

shuttlespanker:
so, what is the cost to a haulier to buy and have fitted a low rolling resistance drive axle tyre, majority of the work is motorway or dual carriageway driving?

or does info that need to be from a tyre supplier and not yourself?

Hi Shuttlespanker,

Thank you for the question - the haulier would need to speak to their local tyre dealer.

do michelin not sell tyres direct?
or would i have to have a large fleet to buy direct?
i am not interested in speaking to my local tyre dealer, if they thought you were going to buy michelin tyres they would tell you what you wanted to hear!
I would rather speak to the engine driver than the oily rag!
could you tell me how your 295/80 r22.5 steer tyres compare to bridgestone r297’s
and your drive axle tyres in the same size compare to hankook dh05’s?
I think we need proven fact’s before we part with any money not a salesman’s banter!
