I haven’t read all/most of this thread, but at one point he(barry) questioned whether when joining other clubs/ organisations did people ask to see the accounts, usually not, but that often because these clubs would have a recognised structure, including chairman treasurer and secretary, and would have an AGM marked as part of a calendar of events, a statement of aims, and a constitution.
The First poster to raise queries over the financial structure, was lending weight to his concerns, by referencing past experience running a charity. This seemed to be dismissed by Barry.
I did use Truckersworld, many years ago, but it seemed that if your opinion didn’t suit, it was either shouted down, or ignored. The site became very cliquey. I moved on, or back to TN.
Barries aims to talk for drivers has been done, I like many, though not enough am a member of a Trade Union (urtu) I have a mate who is allways carping on about driver unity, and says we should have an RHA for drivers, I say we have, join a trade union. The 2 main recognised driver unions Unite and URTU both I’m led to believe meet with the government and other industry bodies on the Haulier forum. and both lobby MP’s at parliament. Both have stated aims to improve the working conditions of drivers, and both represent their members at disciplinary meeting and help with legal cost of work based court action. Though My membership is purely selfish, as I want to know I have someone fight My corner in difficult circumstances.
The nature of being a Tramper mainly, but any driver really, is that you have to be quite individual, you are not in an office or on a production line, its a bit like farming, you often have to make decisions without being able to reference some one who you are subordinate to, though this is not as much the case these days. This leads to this job being done by capable people who are able to sort out there own ■■■■, that doesn’t sit well with collective action or representation.
One final thought, I am surprised, that there are still those who want to do away with the DCPC, Personaly, I think it should have a sense of jepordy entailed, ei, an exam with a pass or fail. Then it might be taken more seriously, also, like the company I work for, all the firms should bear the cost, and pay for the drivers attendance.
