The lottery of used trucks

Gents, after some guidance please

Need a 6x2 midlift, 460-480bhp. Currently run an old XF which is ok but has cost a lot to keep on the road this summer.

What I am after is some idea of reliability and things to look at on a XF or FH Volvo, 60-61 plate. Our garage (in house at another haulier) does look after a couple of Volvos but is predominately DAF; nearest main dealer garages for both are in Peterborough so not far.

I like the Volvo but know nothing about them. Thanks in advance…

I know of 2 ten plate fh 500 xl’s, around 700k kms, new clutches, fridge, tv prep, Bluetooth etc. £22k each

Thanks Jay, sounds good but they are a little leggy, don’t mind spending more for a 400-500k unit if I can find one.

I can get you a 63 plate 500 fully loaded 300 on it for 51k

When I see a advert quoting air horn ,fridge , tv prep and all the bull I don’t bother reading any further ,I am more interested in who’s has it been what’s it been doing ect .

Well that’s the real lottery right there

Volvo are offering a range of used truck, with finance and upto 24 months drive line warranties, although the ones you’re looking at probably be 12 months. They advertise them in truck locator, with the weekly finance price, and I think they want 20% deposit.

I like Volvos but I’ve been looking at the Iveco deal, £299 a week for a new stralis 460, on full contract hire, 140,000kms per year, and it’s not a basic spec truck. I just waiting for them to get back to me with a quote for a 4x2, if it works and my boss likes it I’ll look further into it.

It’s total pot luck, even at 400-500,000 km a truck is going to have a lot of expensive repairs coming up.

Thanks all, I’ll have a look at truck locator.

It is difficult to get a grasp on what’s out there and in budget as everything is advertised “POA”. Time to fire off some emails.

Any further comments on weak spots/things to look out for on either appreciated, thanks

I know where there are 2x XF105 DAFs with 270,000km and nearly a full years ticket at a great price. 13 plate ex Daf contract hire. PM for details

What makes you think a 60 or 61 plate is going to be any better than your old xf ? I saw trucks 5 years old at the breakers yard the other day ready for the chop cos there engine problems are to expensive to put right, tragic sign of the times, and shows newer ain’t always better.

Yes, I often get asked by mates buying cars or trucks to give them the once over and I’m very reluctant to.

I tend to either buy vehicles with verifiable known problems the owner doesn’t want to throw money at or more generally vehicles that aren’t being passed off as up together when someone really wants shot of. Big lease hire fleet disposals are a good bet. They just get shot of the whole lot at a set date and you might have a dozen or more vehicles to choose from and they don’t tend to plan in advance and you’ll find trucks that have had new tyres the week before.

Yes, something to consider is avoiding newer models and buying late models in the production cycle. Buy a model that’s been around on the market long enough all the major problems are known and there are plenty around still working with high mileages also if there is a new or facelift model out the old one usually sells at a significant discount with the same mileage and frankly, to most people outside the industry, all trucks have looked the same for the last half century.

Same applies with cars and vans and with them you can look at ebay and see what model there is plenty kicking around still working at high mileages. Like Sprinter vans there’ll be loads on ebay still merrily doing their thing at 250,000 miles or more so you know if you can get hold of one with 100,000, at a good price, there’s probably still plenty of life.

Thanks some good advice here.

The XF we have now has rust issues and also cannot go into the LEZ. It’s been with us 8 years

I totally get your comments about new not being necessarily better, I would run a 525 EC14 if it was practical for us!

Thanks Matt, PM incoming.

Maybe look for an ex-demo truck with low milage…

If you’re looking ex demo best to ring round the main dealers of the make you’re wanting.
