The Harry Gill Fan Club!

I know what you mean Harry, GOM forgets you are soon to be 80,and me not too far behind. Your brain thinks you can do anything but when you try, your body soon tells you that your not twenty one any more. At this very moment I am suffering with back pain due to clearing my front garden on Thursday. But I most likely keep doing it because I’m a fool but don’t laugh at me.

Hiya,
Norm, I know where your’e coming from getting to the point of being totally knackered
I think I’ll be able to manage but when I try it’s a different kettle of fish, I knelt on a
little stool thing to try and do a little job in the garden where I’ve just removed the old
greenhouse could I hell get up there was nothing to get hold of I was just too far away
from the fence to get hold of something to pull myself up, Luckily the Missus came out
to put some washing out or I’d still be there, which after her getting myself upright the
usual lecture about getting the gardener in to do it, I hate to admit it but it does look
like that is going to be the answer.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hmn, I’m not far behind Harry, I’m 76, and it’s getting to the stage where my back just isn’t working as it should (like Mr Gill, if I do manage to get down I need something close at hand to help me get up). It depresses me when I KNOW how to do jobs on my car but I’m just not physically able, it’s a bitter pill to swallow.
On the bright side my new knees are a 100% success so I do get out for a walk (and a pint) most days.
Just curiosity, amongst all us old lads, (ex knights of the road) is there anyone who HASN’T got back trouble?

I’m waiting to have my back sorted out , and the old knees are buggered . if i am daft enough to kneel down i make sure there is something solid to drag myself back up on . i think my spring has sprung ! oh for the times when i could put a hand on the chockrail and vault up effortlessly , but that and jumping out of the cab is probably the cause . dave

I am no longer able to walk very far or do anything on vehicles that involves laying down underneath them. I actually had to admit defeat and put the car into a garage last week (got trade price though!) to have a steering rack rod fitted and the steering tracked up, and I also have some welding to do on my van but just can’t manage it at present so it just sits there silently! At least it isn’t eating anything haha. Old age must be kicking in now I reckon?

Pete.

Dave, are you saying in aroundbout way, that you are yearning for a " jump"■■?

ah, the mind is willing……

Dave, as you say most of us used to jump out of the cab and could leap onto the trailer using the chockrail, I remember when they started fitting sideguards in the eighties, taking the michael out of the older drivers about having ladders fitted to help them do their job. What goes round comes round!! I really struggle now. I don’t have back trouble but, my hips are knackered and getting up from my knees is getting difficult, strangely though, I can ride my bike all day long without any knee trouble. Regards Kev.

Hiya,
You mentioned bike riding Kev, I take it you mean a pedal cycle !!!, I had a go on
one of those “steady away” mountain bikes a little while back, with my intention
of buying a second hand one “to get a bit of exercise” I got onto a bit of nice flat
road and was pedalling steadily along when a "thousand axle million foot long
thing passed me at full chat nearly blowing me to oblivion I had travelled about
a hundred yards from base under pedal power I returned back to my starting
point bike pushed along the footpath by me on foot to check if I needed a new
set of underwear needless to say it’s via bus or jam-jar from now on, I’m no hero.

Pete says he had to put the car into a garage, aye, a month ago the Jaguar needed a new pair of front discs, stuff me, 10 years ago I could have done the job in an hour, not any more i can’t, the garage it was. Luckily I know the lads well so up on the lift it goes, I did one side while he did the other. Makes a hell of a difference when you can work at a comfortable height.

It does. I have the use of a four post lift on a local farm but, as I haven’t been there to assist him on the farm lately, I felt guilty about asking him if I could ‘borrow’ it so the garage it had to be! Blooming vertigo is my problem, if I lay down for even a few minutes my head is thumping and I feel nauseous, plus I have other issues that are still awaiting test results. I’m 65 later this year, not exactly ancient but I have certainly felt about 101 at times recently!

Pete.

Well my car is now sitting on my drive doing nowt atm as still can’t drive will have a go at weekend as can now put foot down still need the sticks though slowly getting there seen physio yesterday he say looking good so far gave me some advice & see him next week for to start work in gym

Had a knackered back for a long time now take medication from Dr as well as some physio which helps yeah know I am younger then most here but did come off the bike many moons ago for knacker back also have to go to local hospital to have heart checked as they think have a murmur or irregular heart beat which they want to check mind don’t think they will find anything due to fact I don’t have a heart as kids say I am a cruel heartless mother     apart form that fine

they all say that ang , but as soon as there is trouble they come crying back to dear old mum . our kids are the same age as you and they still ask mum and dad what they should do sometimes . dave

Too true Dave. Our lad is 24 and has just moved back in with us after 5yrs in Scotland.

Looks like y son will be moving back here after 4.5 years in Scotland as him & fiancee have split after 9 years   daughter won’t let me see grandkids   nieces partner passed away on tuesday leaving her with a 13mth old daughter she is devastated

Harry my heart will not be a problem it is just normal for me & will be at next do in the toon ■■

our two ( lad and lass ) made us feel very humble and so very proud of them earlier this year as they paid for a holiday for us for both for our seventieth birthdays and said it was what we had done for them over the years, so we must have done something right ( or they want to make sure we don’t leave them out of our will  ) it is not often that I am speechless but I was at that moment and we had a week in Holland . Brenda has still over a month to go for hers but she still enjoyed it.

cheers Johnnie
