The englishmans at brienne

anyone out there who use to stop over at phils brienne national from chalons to bourg wonder if anyone knows phils werabouts what hes upto nowadays. some great weekends there

Good grief, your a bit behind mate.
Phil sold up to Griff n Debbie in about 2001. Griff was, so the story goes, another ex Yeardleys man.
Griff n Debbie sold up to a Frenchman, quite a few years ago, so its back to being Pierres Place now and is apparently not open on Sundays any longer.

There may have been a more recent change of hands again, I have a vague memory of hearing something but I was a little ‘under the weather’ that night

I never met Phil, only Griff n Debbie.
I’ve no idea where he went after moving out of Brienne.

Last time i stopped there must of been around 2002/2003

Stopped there once, when Griff n Debbie had it. I was with Murfitts at the time and it wasn’t long before Murfitts closed down. I never got a chance to go back for a long time after that and had heard they had sold it by the time the next chance came round. So I stopped at Le Pub at Bourge instead.

know the pub at bourg as well had many a weekend there to simon. now that was a regular stop for the murfitt boys  remember macon pat he was a rare breed

Yup, I remember Macon Pat. For some reason, I never saw him at Le Pub, only ever at Macon.
Then there was Chip Pan Charlie, Spanish Bob, Splinter, Ziggy, Gill, City Cruiser, Rikki, Septic Simon & The Rottweiler and so many other characters. They were an interesting company to work for.

Simon , did you ever stop at the little routier at Jayat , with the parking area on the opposite side of the road ?
Can’t for the life of me remember the name of the original owner, then it was taken over by a Frenchman called Louis
Had many a happy weekend there, esp in the summer when we would drive down to the lakes

If i remember it was Jean Paul (ex Gendarme) & Maria late 80’s early 90’s. I went past Jayat last year- it’s still open but the parking area aint a dust bowl like it used to be. It’s been all tarted up so no more blowing red over then!

Thats them , he was a character . I remember after Louis done a bunk , owing lots of money to suppliers etc., it was closed for a while. I did pop in once or twice when it reopened , food was still good as ever but I don’t think the new owner was actually looking for business from truck drivers, might still be him there now , I am talking about 10 years ago ( ish) when I last visited

Jayat patrons were Jean Pierre and Maris, who had a bit of the ■■■■ about her 25yrs ago when I first used to go in there, there was a little bird that worked there called Karin, she went out with an English driver, well that’s what she thought, he was just docking in a friendly port on the way through

correct use to be run by jean paul ex gendermare and maurice. before louis who did do a runner. a regular stop of mine back then use to park round the back nr the church. many a good wknd there

No, I never got to Jayat.

One I used fairly regularly was the little Routier in the corner of the big Intermarche at Le Chambre. Big dust bowl parking behind the supermarket for trucks, a set of AS24 pumps. A pleasant little village for weekend wandering if you liked  and a very nice people working in the restaurant. The patron was a small slender lady, her fella had the local motorbike shop, had prizes for International Arm Wrestling and was rumoured to be an ex-legionaire. He looked big enough to have won those arm wrestling prizes too, he was also a very nice bloke. He would run us up to the village and pick us up later at a pre-arranged time, naturally with some money spending time at the Routier but then again, fair’s fair.

Rikki and I had a very convivial weekend there, along with a group of other Murfitts drivers. It must have been. We only managed to piece together what occurred when we met some weeks later and were able to compare notes. No fighting was involved btw

la chambre resto still there and still very very good… open all weekend too… watch out for the big pot hole on way into parking… turned up there for a 24 at 22.15 on a sat night and still got fed… 3 or 4 kirs, menu, inc 2 jugs rouge…16 euro… can’t fault the place… cheers all

Glad to hear it. It was always a good place to stop.
Is it still the same Patron ? And staff come to think of it ?

I also remember stopping regularly, on week days, at various routiers along the National 6 between Chalon/Saone and Tournus. Some very good restaurants there, again going back 10 years since I was last there, so I would love to know if they are still going. I would presume that the old owners have retired or moved on now.
One of my favourites was Norbert and Jacquelines (near St Cyr), it had a good tarmac parking area with CCTV, the food there was excellent and the service very friendly. Then there were 2 or three very close to each other, just south of Chalon, IIRC wasn’t one of them called the Mistral or something like that, with parking behind and all 3 had parking on the N6 opposite them,it was run by a Morrocan and his daughter (boy she could be a misery sometimes) he was always laughing and joking though. Then further down another favourite was a routier in the middle of nowhere on the left with a large dusty parking area, again run by a moroccan or algerian. Old age has set in I can’t for the life of me remember his name or the name of the restaurant either, this one was about 5k’s before the routier on the right that had a AS24 in the parking area.
Happy memories, I would love to revisit those places, but then again I might be disappointed with the way they are now
