The Dutch way of solving overnight parking

For the past three months, I’ve sat on loading docks in Tilburg and watched a large neighbouring piece of scrubland being developed. The workers have always gone by the time I get there but I’ve seen the progress they’ve made.

First, excavators and bulldozers were brought in to dig it all up and level it. Then massive pumps for a few weeks to drain some ground water. Then, drainage ditches and sewer pipes laid. Then finally thousands of brick paving stones laid. As I say, the work has taken all summer and probably cost quite a few euros. I thought they were laying foundations for a new DC to be built.

I came past last night and it’s turned out to be a new truck park. I estimate 60 to 80 trucks could be accommodated if not more. There is a toilet block too and fencing all around. It all looks quite fancy.

And the most amazing bit is it’s free parking. All that money spent building it and it’s free to park. I didn’t think there was a real problem with parking. You’d maybe get ten trucks if that parked on surrounding estate roads, but it looks like the council burgers in Tilburg decided it needed a proper truck park.

Councils in the UK could take note of this, but as already discussed several times on TN, it will never happen. Land is too valuable to squander on truck parking when more lucrative housing can be built instead.

I’m hoping the visiting truckers don’t trash the place too quickly in the first few weeks. I wonder though how long before Waberers or Wolter Koops get wind of this park and establish an outpost.

Where about is that in Tilburg ?

Excellent. Now install vending machines for canned beans, canned tuna and packaged sliced bread and the place will pay for itself in a few months.

This is why we can’t have nice things

Councils in England aren’t pro-active to a problem, they react to the moaning minority. Look at how Kent are dealing with it. We all know they will say it costs this much, and that will come out of social care budgets, and schools, but we will still waste millions on our new offices.

It’s on the corner of Theseusstraat and Gessworenhoekseweg (try saying that guys. No, I can’t either). Google Vossenberg truck park and there is some info in Dutch online. Google translate is your friend.

Thanks for that City Cat. Pronunciation is a piece of cake (I speak fluent Dutch btw).

It’s not exactly a vote winner either is it, and votes are all they are worried about as that means that they keep their jobs.

I know. It was more to show the other guys the linguistic challenges I have to face on a daily basis. Thank god that most people can switch straight to English when needed.

However, I do try but it’s frustrating to fuel up at the Shell, and then in my best attempt at a Dutch accent, say “pomp drie en adblue alstublieft” and the cashier just replies in English “do you want a token for the coffee machine”? There’s just no fooling them that I’m Dutch.

Yes but at least your trying. On my Euro travels I find trying to speak the local language helps a lot

Part of the Netherland’s preparations for Brexit have included extra truck parking spaces and customs facilities.

Unlike here in the UK, where we will carry on just like before, only free of the yoke of Brussels (apparently).

You can find out about the resultant shambles here

I’m going to book a unicorn-drawn taxi to the nearest branch of Wetherspooons on Brexit day so I can celebrate in style with a copy of the Express tucked under my arm.

At least you’re giving it a go. You’ll probably never lose the English accent.

And the dutch truckers will also use the facilities…whereas many others in europe are just a free parking area…for the eastern bloc…the ideal is of course to charge for parking, and offset it against anything bought, meals, fuel, goodies from the trucks shop, anyone not displaying a ticket, gets clamped…then has to pay double.
