The "Dear Daf"...Problem Thread

Dan_mo:
Dear DAF,

edit ---------
On aside note, has anybody ever got more than 65% on the eco performance? I spend most days doing 2 - 3 drops from the midlands to 3 - 4 hours away and within 1 hour of each other and never got above 55%.

I reset it ounce and did 350 miles on motorway with cruise control on and 70 miles of non motorway and it was only 45%. So that’s like DAF saying our engine is 45% efficient?

---------- edit

Er, despite everything (see previous thread), I managed to stay at an indicated 92% for the week. Is that good then ?

Nope, everyone is different! As a spare driver, I’ve driven everyone in our yard and we have some that has never shown above 30% and others that average about 60-70%. Even our most economic driver has only managed 75% on his, (until he had to go into London!)

They are useless, and no reflection on anyone’s driving abilities!

I’ve been using one with a manual gearbox and got 88 - 92 for a complete week. In the same truck with an automatic gearbox it goes down to 55-60%
They’re not fit for purpose.

Had a handsome XF to drive for a week recently and it reminded me how utterly infuriating DAFS are to drive. 1. The endless relentless warning noises FOR. EVERY. SINGLE. THING! 2. The geriatric gearbox 3. The unusable cruise control. Just randomly cuts power all over the place and 3. An engine that wouldn’t pull the skin of a rice pudding

I`m getting two broken links and one announcement that DAF have won awards at 2016 Commercial Fleet Awards.
Guessing that DAF sales set up last link, and DAF gearbox software experts set up first two links?

No that’s just my crap pc skills

Im in no position to make any criticism there then. My own level of computer literacy is nowt special. The "Commercial Fleet Awards" are by the FTA with votes from FTA members?? So, the operators/voters will be voting for the best value for money trucks? And presumably they will have bought those same trucks? So, the award will inevitably go to the manufacturer with most sales? And so most operators will congratulate themselves on buying the "best" trucks, i.e. the most popular trucks?? Good "feel good" factor there Id suggest.

Nothing to do with jollies of course, goodness me no.

Euro 6 CF:

Why does the instrument cluster rattle?
Why does it take over an hour of the engine not running before I can get an up to date oil level check?
Why is there a loud whining sound from the windscreen when its very windy?
In regards to the AEBS, why does it get triggered by overhead bridges on the motorway?
Again with the AEBS, why does it get triggered when the car in front of me has turned left and already cleared my path?
2016 Model: Why is there a 3 position engine brake level and not just a momentary one like the 2014 one?
2016 Model: Why are there flat spots in acceleration using cruise control when in ECO mode? Why does it climb a hill slower than any other truck on the road in ECO mode? Why does it change into 12th gear at 40MPH? Why doesn’t it change down gear when going up hill until below 1000RPM? Absolutely none of those are economical at all and the latter two just do damage to the engine and gearbox.

well said, but dont stop there, what about the adaptive cruise, dropping speed before you get over the crest of the hill
brake ■■■■■■ only making a noise but doing nothing when loaded,
the lane monitor going crazy when going through road works when narrow lanes,
the truck slamming on the brakes when an idiot car driver cuts in front
and the list goes on, I have been driving daf XF’s for over twenty years and
the 16 and 66 plates are a nightmare to drive, clocking you for over speed at 55, Daf have realy lost the plot
bring back the old shape,

New variation on water running down the inside of the windscreen this week. I think said annoyance is due to condensation on inside of cab, as it only occurs in cold weather when sleeping in cab. It doesnt occur in summer whatever the weather. Anyway this week had a cold snap, in the morning moved off and within a few minutes had a few drops of cold water run down inside of my collar. Made my squeal a bit, quite a surprise until I realised what it was. Seems that water is condensing on the inner roof, collecting in the lenses of the interior lights and then dripping out when truck rolls bit. See if the dealers will address this problem with the same eagerness they have the other faults on these heaps of rubbish? Im with MagicMax, the older DAFs were fine; the latest ones have been thrown out of the factory without, it seems any development or road testing or any useful dealer follow up. They used to be good reliable trucks that did what was asked, now theyre let down by stupid, avoidable niggles, as well as all the other bigger issues, that I wont repeat again.

Evil8Beezle:
Am I the only one who’s annoyed at where they put the screen wash refiller, or am I the only one who refills it?

bring it to our garage the fitters love that lol

I know most of you drive newer lorries, but why are the mirrors crap on our 54 plate motors in the rain?

Anyone know how to fix the height adjust on a CF seat? Ours either goes straight to the highest setting or just off the floor, limper spec. It will do somewhere in between but requires luck and precision clicking of the switch. I guess the valve is sticking open?

Think this has something to do with the massive gap between the wheel and the wheel arch, could be wrong but it doesn’t matter if it’s old or new, the spray that hits them makes them useless! Especially the nearside one with the quarter light bit also getting covered…

Doe’s Montgomery Transport run DAF’s ?

Anyone know how to cure a leaky sunroof in a CF? I thought it was condensation but I found a slight drip today even though it’s been parked up all day.
I’ve checked for twigs, dirt etc all to no avail. There is some moss between the sunroof and the roof but nothing major.
