The "Dear Daf"...Problem Thread

Regarding the shoddy AEBS, the ones I’ve driven had a switch to turn it off. It does reset itself when the engine is turned off, but it is better than having 1/2 your stuff thrown through your windscreen every 5 minutes!

Yes there is a switch but our firm (no names etc) ask us to sign a form that says we won’t turn it off ever because we would be disabling a mandatory safety device and disciplinary action and all that will follow.

Defect it and it always comes back as no faults found - so you’re all bleedin liars! [emoji57]

If it was “mandatory” why is there a switch?

:unamused:

Hah, i got told by one of our drivers that if i turned AEBS off and rammed some bugger up the arse that i’d be held responsible.
He couldn’t fathom that for all the years i’ve been driving the driver was responsible, long before AEBS bollox was ever dreamed of, is still responsible with AEBS, and will be responsible so long as his arse is on that driving seat, if you ram someone up the arse with an AEBS equipped lorry the third party won’t be claiming from the manufacturer.
Bloody Nora :unamused:

Just quoting but it could be the use of the fear factor to ensure compliance[emoji57]

Mine is permanently off btw!

I don’t doubt you realise how ridiculous their statement is FredoftheRed, I just cant believe that people think we are so brain dead as to believe whatever they say.

Juddian - that made me laugh. Why don’t yu introduce your mate to RedFred’s employers, they sound like a match made in heaven…

So there’s a switch to turn the thing off!?

Wonderful… so, let’s analyse this, shall we?

DAF take a confetti approach to switch placement (ie, throw a load of switches in the air and fit 'em where they land), some of which, being brutal, you have to be part Librarian to be able to reach from the driver’s seat.
So, as a newbie to these POC, I’m supposed to spend bl##dy hours trying to work out what all these pointless switches are for, etc, etc.

Think the second word might be ‘off’.

Surely, the point is though …

a] If it’s a piece of ‘Safety’ equipment, it should work - correctly - in ALL scenarios!

b] If it’s concidered, as a piece of ‘Safety’ equipment, to be so vital as to be factory fitted then, alongside a], why give the driver the option of turning the ■■■■ thing off?

Simples, you know the scenario i talked about earlier, packed snow and we’re trundling along at 25/30mph just trying to keep the bloody thing straightish and the all seeing eye sees a larger than average snowflake (and boy arn’t they some snowflakes about these days), so chucks the anchors on leading to full fold up jacknife slide which stops at a tree or another lorry, well the bloke behind the wheel should have been morphed instantly from the steering wheel operative that they want for 363 days of the piggin year into a fully switched on lorry driver at home with seat of the pants feel for the lorry in question despite never being allowed to control it before :unamused: and is to blame this time because he didn’t turn the garbage off, some say win win in driver world its lose lose.

Confetti approach to switch placement, i bloody love it     brilliant, please can i make use of that phrase when the time is right should i be sent to the Daf agent, pretty please…where’s the fluttering eylashes seductive smiley?

Dear DAF 4:
Only a quickie this time. Water runs on the inside of the windscreen. Im pretty sure its due to condensation; runs of water appear down the screen, especially in the mornings after sleeping in the truck. Had it last winter, nowt throughout the summer in spite of some thunder storms etc, now its chilly out and the problem has returned. Again its common to most of our new SSCs, but not the old ones.

Fix the bloody mirrors! Oh Jesus wept. I don’t know what they are are but useful, they anit. When I’m driving a Daf, I can’t get it straight with the mirrors in the position I want them to be. Either I’m at an angle with a sliver of trailer in the mirrors or I can get straight but 75% of my trailer is now in the mirrors.

Dear DAF,

I drive a very nice “looking” 2015 CF 330 with what can only be described as a POS auto gear box in.

  1. As mentioned previously you could easily take a 15 min break in between gear changes. so annoying and dangerous…
  2. Why, when going down a hill does the gear box think, “you don’t need engine breaking here, I’ll just pop myself in neutral to help you get that over speed warning”
  3. Why, When I decide that I have more intelligence than the gear box and put it in manual, why when I’m half way up a hill in 9th with the rev counter in the middle of the green band do you then decide that 12th would be a better choice? You bell end!
  4. Who decided that the best possible place on the truck for the over night heater was behind the bunk? Its reminiscent of trying to sleep inside the engine of a 747 on take off!

On aside note, has anybody ever got more than 65% on the eco performance? I spend most days doing 2 - 3 drops from the midlands to 3 - 4 hours away and within 1 hour of each other and never got above 55%.

I reset it ounce and did 350 miles on motorway with cruise control on and 70 miles of non motorway and it was only 45%. So that’s like DAF saying our engine is 45% efficient?

I thought it was just me that struggled to get a decent score on the daf driver performance thingy. I think I done well to get above 50. I normally drive a scania g450 and I usually get high 80 to early 90s on that. Fortunately out of about 30 trucks, our place only has a single euro 6 daf and it’s only very rarely that I get to drive it.

Unless I change jobs I very much doubt I’ll ever driver a DAF again (Last drove one year ago 2014 euro 6 ), only MAN Iveco or Mercedes
Boss won’t buy DAF Renault or Volvo

I also particularly like it when going up a hill it will drop down to 11th, then say no I want 12, hmm, maybe not I’ll try 11th again, no 12th it is, no 11th, no 12th, no 11th, no 12th… FFS just stay in 11th until you’ve hit top speed for say 5 seconds, and obviously over the incline! :imp:

Or maybe it’s just me and my CF that’s limited to 52.

Anit nothing stopping me last night. Flying past everything.

Why also on modern DAF trucks do you have to turn off the engine then return the key to 0 before you can restart?
If I’m on site and need to turn the engine off to speak to someone I then have to turn the key right back to 0 before restarting!!
Really annoying!!

Haven’ driven a DAF since early nineties, cab is almost identical inside apart from height and wider bed. These new safety features ie AEBS and Adaptive cruise control are all very well but ACC is annoying but will not cause big problems but the AEBS is downright dangerous for following traffic because it has not been perfected and been put into service far too early. ECO Roll is another no brainer , first thing I learned when I started driving was never ever knock the vehicle out of gear because it is out of control, seems it’s acceptable now. Now for the crunch, the AS TRONIC, Daf needs to send their gearbox programmers to Sweden to learn how to program it, it really is light years behind Volvo and Scania. I can put up with the slow change in Auto but it really needs a Power mode or kickdown to get you out of trouble. Wish I’d never asked for an Auto, my own fault I suppose. Buy cheap you get rubbish.

The AEBS is a joke on these. Nearly got run into on a roundabout with a filter lane. A major road interchange designed for you to keep your speed to ease traffic flow. As I went round the left corner it thought I was going to crash into the cars in the lane to my right. The truck slammed brakes on causing the cars following behind to nearly end up into the back of me.

The dead spot in acceleration between 40 and 50 mph is also stupid. When joining a motorway on a slip road you’re supposed to match the speed of the traffic you’re merging with. The truck doesn’t let you and you end up trying to join at 40 ish.

There are so many glitches with the safety technology and gearbox software all
In the name of fuel saving that make these trucks dangerous to other road users.

Hard to believe they have been a market leader.

Oh, and the reversing warning cannot be totally switched off. Yes you can disable the audible switch but it uses the hazards instead. I just want nothing when reversing - no hazard lights, no noises, just little white lights at the back.
