The D2 myth for 10yr photo renewals - let's have some facts

Some people claim that a fresh D2 form (Application for Large Good Vehicle) needs to be completed when renewing your 10yr photo otherwise you will lose your LGV entitlements (allegedly). I have been unable to find an official source to support this and thus far no-one else has provided me with one either.

MMTM (My Mate Told Me) myth or not?

Facts please, not more MMTM stories. Thanks.

But you are not just renewing your photo, you are updating your LGV with a new address. Different scenario. D1 for updating car/bike licence. D2 for updating truck, and bus licence.

Source: DVLA

I have just renewed my licence, C+E, I also renewed the wife’s licence C1+E.
Both were done on line. They asked for Passport details, and imported in the new photo and signature. Paid the money on line and both licences arrived within a week.

Photocard driving licence holder

When changing your address you’ll need to:
-complete the ‘changes’ section on your paper counterpart, sign and date it
-send both parts of your driving licence ie photocard and counterpart document to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN

direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dr … /DG_078070

Applying by post

You’ll need to:
-fill in the photo renewal form D798
-include a new passport type photo of yourself that’s been taken within the last month — you don’t need the back of the photo signed
-return both the photocard and counterpart of your licence — if you have lost one or both parts you can still use this application but will need to tick the relevant box in part one of the D798
-enclose a cheque or postal order for £20.00 — no fee is needed if you have medical short period licence or you’re aged 70 or over
-send your application and fee (if applicable) to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DH

dft.gov.uk/dvla/forms/onlineforms.aspx - full list of downloadable forms but alas no D798

OK. Facts I now have. Thought they closed at 5 but noticed on their site that they’re open til 8.30 so belled them up and put all this to them about the alleged D2 requirement. Here’s the craic :

If you are a vocational licence holder and are ONLY wanting to renew your photo, THE D2 FORM IS NOT REQUIRED. In this scenario you only need to fill in the D1 form, ticking the “to the renew the photo on my licence” option in section 1, then send off the form with your payment and old licence and you’re done.

The only time a D2 form is needed when renewing your photo is if you are updating/applying for other LGV stuff, eg. if your vocational categories have - or are about to - expire, or you are re-applying for medical reasons, or after a disqualification - you can do it all on the same form.

That said, she said that the new D2 form can now be used instead of the D1 form if you are only renewing your photo as it now has a specific option for renewing the photo only. The old D2 forms do not have this option (the one I have in my possession right now). The new D2 forms have a barcode at the bottom right of the page whereas the old ones don’t.

Being the thorough [zb] that I am :stuck_out_tongue: I also brought up the topic of drivers losing their vocational entitlements when only having sent the D1 form and she said that this is indeed true :open_mouth: but that would only happen if :

  • The vocational entitlements had expired or were due to expire within 56 days
  • The vocational entitlements had been revoked for medical reasons (ie. no new medical cert provided at the required ages)
  • The vocational entitlements had been revoked due to a disqualification

I also mentioned the D2 header on the direct.gov website (as per Neil’s post above) stating that the form was to be used for photo renewals. She said that was correct since the introduction of the new D2 which has this option. You can use either the D1 or D2 form now to renew your photo, not both.

This is all from Rhian at DVLA who can be contacted on 0300 790 6801 option 3 option 7. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, I would have done that but I had an address change as well and the PO helpline number said that they couldn’t do both together at the same time, only photo renewal or address change. Stupid system, but whatever.

I’ve Just done my photo change on line, very easy and no hassle of going to the PO etc. You just need a passport issued in the last five 5 years Renew your driving licence - GOV.UK

…and agree to every government department snooping into your personal affairs. No thanks…

Someone just PMd me, wont mention who incase he wants to remain anon but he said that he went to change his picture and the DVLA say that they have no record of him ever owning a HGV license/entitlement.

I see. So “someone” just randomly PMd you to tell you that did they? I believe you but 1000s wouldn’t.

I must say I was slightly concerned whether mine would come back with the same categories it went out to them with. :open_mouth: I was tempted to stick a post-it note to the front pointing out the categories to them and “please don’t lose them”   . My faith in public sector workers to actually do their job properly is next to zero and I automatically expect the worst the happen. :frowning:

Sam,

The whole idea of the PM system is that the “P” stands for PRIVATE, so there’s no “incase.” (Sic.)
If the content of the message wasn’t private, he’d have posted it publicly on a forum for others to read.

From your post, it seems that you might not be aware of this, so I thought I’d just point it out:

From Forum Rule #8

PM’s and Emails are private between users and must remain so.

If you’ll take a friendly tip, I’d say that you’ve already gone as close as you dare.

sure  although in my great experience of forums (owned and developed many website) people tend not to use them quite as PRIVATE messages, although just a way of talking one to one. Like I said though however, I won’t and don’t intend to mention who.

Where is the logic?
Have to renew photo on driving license after 10 years yet if your passport photo is less than 5 years old they will use that so in 10 years time the photo on license will be 15 years old.

Some genius came up with the excuse about one not looking like their photo in 10 years time, hence the need for a new one, but anyone with any intelligence knows it’s nothing more than a money making exercise in reality.

And the digi card expires every 5 years but they use the licence photo so that could be nearly 15 years old too if you have only just started with a tacho
