I work out of snodland on class 2 in the afternoon/evening doing frozen so cant say exactly what it is like at thurrok. however as a class 2 i do all the express stores south and southwest of the river and down as far as hastings/eastborne as well as the whole of kent. I was told that the thurrok depot did the other side of the river however i have seen artics at the drops i go to delivering ambient/groceries.
In general its an easy job just wheel the cage onto the tail lift and lower it down for the store staff to collect off the taillift. however there are a few stores that are difficult due to accsess or slopping the wrong way. occastionaly you might get a cage that has a broken wheel that can be a bit of a pain. Also if you do the frozen you are only required to pick up empty cages or cages with rubish in on your last drop where as i belive if you do the fresh you have to pick some up from every store and move everything around.
When i started as agency i was given an assesment and was told what to do and the microlise (which only works 2 weeks out of the month) if its not broken) was explained to me. next day i was out on my own. Generaly i only have 6-9 drops a shift.
edit to add each store has a risk assesment the arrows of which are fairly useless as its done when no cars are in the way however, it at least gives you half a clue where your supposed to park roughly
Again i dont know about thurrock but if you have picked up rubbish we have to take it to a different yard for processing which can ad an hour onto your shift so watch your working time breaks as 4 infringments in 12 weeks can lead to be shown the door.
edit to add there are risk assesments that maybe a tick box exersise but give you at least a clue where the goods in is and where to park. and sometimes how to get into the store ie go in the exit.

Do they send you out with someone to show you da ropes!
Is the Pope English?
Google Earth is your friend, it’ll show you the yards, the route in, and if you click on street view, you should be able to virtually walk the approach to the delivery
Tescos Thurrock is the ambient deliveries. ie. All the heavy stuff, drinks, cans, dog food & crisps (not heavy)
The dagenham site do the fresh/frozen stuff. The recycling is also done at Dagenham, so I’d imagine that’s where you’d need to drop off the collected cardboard.
I’m not sure about 1 hr at the rsu , at donny it would often be ques round the building , out the yard & along by the football ground , I’d often get rang up to take it back into the dc & a shunter would take it round later, or if you were being sent out to just do a local collection you’d have to go & tip a load of rubbish at rsu before going to your collection .
Horrible part of job , then we’ve the 6/9 drops round south London spoke of above & apparently we’re told it’s the best job bar none !!! Who are they trying to kid !!
As an agency guy they will usually send you out with one guy for the day to give you the basics.
RSU is done at Dagenham that is correct but as a Thurrock driver you do not collect waste AT ALL. All you bring back is empty cages or maybe you will have a collection at a farm or warehouse.

Not the case in London. For example canary wharf Argos I believe you dont use google maps lol. There are quite a few others in which if you just use Google maps you will either get stuck, fined or just end up in wrong place. Then there are also cases in which google maps will tell you not to go down a bus only road or through a bus gate but you have permission. But you are given a planned route map so its not too bad. Working at Thurrock you will learn all this .
As for Thurrock being good or bad… It’s ok. It is a very boring job. It is also not job and knock. It’s you go when they say you can go. For example if you get back after 9 hours they can send you out again even if it runs you to 13 hours. There is no turning that down. Which for many people, it is quite annoying.

I never mentioned Google maps.
Google Earth will allow you to see sites from an overhead aspect so you can figure out the layout of a site before you get there, especially when the addresses you are given generally are the address for the front door of the store, then you can see the ground level view via streetview so you can use a map to work out your route into it

Enforced overtime? Don’t think so, see you tomorrow would be my reply…

It’s not really enforced your an agency driver booked to do up to 12 hours a day
Most days you don’t do that but they can ask you to.

Adam277 - my sincere thanks for the info. Really helpfull.
I guess you are driving out of there.
I do have a couple more questions. I would like to ping these over to you if you are ok with that?
