heeey all now i know this is pointless but i just been thinking for the tesco stores on the isle of white do they have their own RDC on the island? or do theydo the deliverys from the southampton RDC (im presumeing its the southampton with it being the closest to the ferry) and would they take the lorry over on the ferry? or is it just lorry to the docks drop trailor and trailor goes over on the boat and meets up with lorrys over on the island?
i know this may be a pointless thread and can be dealted or moved to apporpriate area but i was just thinking that all
Goods going to the Pile of ■■■■■ generally go by unaccompanied trailers from Portsmouth or go into Vectis Transport in Southampton where they are consolidated and sent across on mafi trailers.
Hello good question,
I work for Mercedes and currently contracted to tesco. I was speaking to a few fitters from a RDC by Scotland (livingstone mayby) and all there freight going to Shetlands/northern Ireland is contracted out to other hauliers. I suppose this is the same principle I will speak to a transport manager tommorow and pop the question. Please don’t get over excited in the mean time.
I remember when Goole DC opened we trunked a hell of a lot of stock direct to IOW in the vans of a local courier company. Cost an absolute fortune, but Tesco used to stump up the cost as a special delivery.

Years ago we went to the IOW for a Holiday .
I went to the Isle of Wight when I was eleven, and then I went back nearly forty years later and they were still selling the same identical postcard- “Cowes you cannot milk, Needles you cannot thread, Freshwater you cannot drink” etc etc etc.
In 2006 I had a load of trips to the IOW and I always seemed to get stuck behind loads of unaccompanied supermarket trailers on the Wightlink ferries in and out of Pompey. Although if I recall correctly Tesco had only just opened a small shop then. Sainsbury’s and Morrisons were the ones.

Whos doing the traction on the IOW? . .Must be coining it in
Yes it was either George Jenkins or the ferry companies themselves.
The big Morrisons store would usually have a couple of trailers in the yard, I think the haulier would drop and swap them rather than wait around and unload.
After doing the day trip from Essex 17 times I was glad to pack it in, but I’d quite like the occasional run there again. It was a nice run if the weather was good. Sitting out on the ferry with a cuppa was a nice way to take a 45. Better still you’d get two in a day!
