Has anyone been to the LIchfield Tesco DC? Going next week and just after any info on how it’s conducted and anything that is particularly looked for please.
Would usually go suited & booted for interview but with a work assessment then drive was wondering whether to take change of clothes or go in smart casual carring work boots.
I’ve done a couple of assessments, and in both cases I went dressed for driving (safety boots and high-viz with tidy but practical clothes on). Both were more like driving tests than interviews, try to think of it that way I suggest.
Wear tidy jeans or work trousers, polished steel toe caps, a polo shirt and a clean hi-vis, also this time a year you’ll need a fleece type jacket, oh and don’t forget a pair of gloves.
The Grafter:
Thanks for the replies, just what I was hoping to hear and confirm.
And if your assessment is booked for early am, bring a torch, it shows real initiative when you do your walk around. Whatever you do, take your time, drive it like you own it.
Based on the two assessments I’ve done, a five hour one will probably consist of some or all of the following:
Paper based test of knowledge of road rules, signs, drivers’ hours regs etc
Coupling up to a trailer
Road test to assess competency/safety on the road
Reverse onto a bay
Possibly additional blind side reverse
Uncoupling trailer
Paperwork and site/company rules (if you pass)
…and maybe more besides…
For the reversing, not much to say really. If you’re lucky you’ll have plenty of room to move around, the assessor will give you an easy bay with space either side for a good margin of safety. If you’re unlucky the yard will be rammed, you’ll have to do a tight reverse between two trailers and/or you’ll have little room in front to position yourself. Don’t worry about shunts, take what you need and use all the space available. It isn’t like the driving test where shunts are considered a negative thing, it is the real world where all that matters is you get in without hitting stuff on the way.
Keep calm, take your time and do everything safely by the book. That’s what they will be looking for, not speed or over-confidence. They want to be surethat they can let you loose on your own with one of their trucks with their name on it and you can bring it back in one piece.
Remember that many companies are short on drivers, especially with Christmas coming, so it is more likely that the job is there for you to lose. Be safe, show a reasonable degree of competence and they’ll likely take a chance on you.
