Tesco axing 500 jobs in distribution centre shake-up

Stobart depot going at Chesterfield and they are also bringing ‘in-house’ warehouse operations run by DHL and Wincanton.

Tesco blaming their loss of market share on anything…apart from the fact they’re sheet

Welham Green is the other DC going, seems like they will be piling a lot of their work into Reading.

They ought to turn that place into a museum, a bit like a preserved steam railway.

I think some have been there long enough waiting to be tipped to be classed as exhibits

This will end up with blue shirts being replaced by sweatshirts… :unamused:

Can’t they just admit they are contracting/shrinking in the face of competition? :open_mouth:
No, they just want to do more with less, what could possibly go wrong? :unamused:

As for DHL, I though it was ES that were tied in with Tosco’s■■?

DHL do warehousing in Snodland I think it is and Wincanton do the transport there but it’s going back in house now

Fair enough, but am I right in thinking that ES do the transport out of the Nursling depot in Southampton?

No, Nursling is Tesco own transport

Cheers for that, I always thought it was ES…

DHL have a frozen warehouse for Tesco in Daventry, the link I read says Tosco are pulling out of that too. Not sure quite what the deal is with that operation but I go past it most nights into Daventry for my collection from another DHL site on there, there is 3 DHL sites there that I know of.

Wincanton were running Snodland. I don’t think I ever actually saw a blue shirt C+E driver there, although there were a few “full time contract” Wincanton drivers.

I imagine that most of the 500 job losses will be from Wincanton and DHL themselves, rather than Tescos actual staff.

Wincanton were running the whole transport show at Snodland, as the managers all seemed to be wearing the relevant uniforms as well.
I’m wondering if that scourge of the “Planned 15 hour shift” is more about these particular contractors than it being a Tescos depot.

Nobbies running Didcot - seemed to be over the top with H&S staying in cab whilst being tipped kinda stuff.
Snodland were just a pain in the arse cancelling you after you’d turned up sometimes, and refusing to pay minimum 8 hours, because they could bully the agencies like that, as a “Block Booker of Drivers” - especially at this time of the year.

I used to ■■■■ them off back by refusing to work two consecutive days - unless they gave me the nod on tomorrow’s shift start time - before I booked off the night before… If they told me “Sorry we don’t need you tomorrow” and then phone me up 9 hours later… They’d find the phone on “one ring answerphone”. :smiling_imp:

Winseer, didcot is a tesco run dc, unless you’re on about the RSU bit which nobbies run?

Stobarts used to run P&G at Trafford Park, asked why the office staff were in Wincanton uniforms, was told that Stobarts low balled the contract renewal price, lost the warehousing side but kept the transport lanes.

Did an agency assessment at Nursling 4 or 5 years ago and asked the Tesco trainer what was the chance of a full time job driving for Tescos was, he replied “zero”. The drivers on the old Tesco contracts had a really good deal and as as they retired/died they were just replacing them with agency. New staff could work there virtually full time but via agency, not employed by Tesco.

Still like that now mate although a few have transferred there but on a new contract

Thats a shame, by what the Trainer was telling me the old contract (which he was on) was excellent, 8 hour shifts for a very good wage. Not many of those around any more unfortunately

There are several people at Snodland who I really, really do hope are out on their ear. One of them has ginger hair.

There seemed to be two yards joined by a lifting barrier gate when I was last there… The staff in the driver waiting room “cooler” area - were wearing red nobby shirts.
This was not long after Nobbies had taken over TDG, but before Nobby sold the business to Xpo. Autum 2012 I believe…

I spend April 2011-August 2015 altogether - working for the various agencies… F&W used to send me to do supply drops at Didcot & Snodland during this period, and then Dagenham after that place opened.
I never got to go to Weybridge before it closed, and never stayed long enough to be sent to Reading, and other places.

At Didcot it was also a Red Shirt Yard Marshal guy that threatened me with being banned from site if I ever tried to sneak back into my cab (by leaving the passenger door unlocked!) and hiding behind the curtains so I could get a kip for the near 4 hours I was there. I still have no intention of spending 4 hours in a cooler room anywhere - thanks very much, so being ‘Banned from Site’ doesn’t really hold much fear for me. :stuck_out_tongue: :smiling_imp:
