Telling DVLA about glasses

Over the last few weeks i’ve noticed myself straining my eyes while driving, pretty much always when on a motorway, so thought i’d best get myself in for an eye test.

Anyway, i went in today, and as it turns out my eyes are absolutley fine, both are just 0.25 out from being 20/20 vision, but he’s given me some prescription glasses to wear while i’m driving to ‘take the strain out’, do i need to inform DVLA about these, as they are only for driving, but i dont HAVE to wear them to see?

If you have been told to wear glasses when you drive then you should inform the DVLA, there is no problem they will just code the back of your licence card with 01. Best to be safe. If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident (seriouse/fatality) and they check medical records and find out you havnt declared that you need eyesight correction you will be in the mire.

I’d say you should, jsut in case, i’d expect they’ll want a letter from the optician though.

Ta. I’ll get on it tomorrow then

I wear glasses while driving but I met the eyesight requirement without them at my last medical in 2010. As I meet the required standard without the glasses to pass their medical I haven’t informed them of the fact I wear them, I can see without them but I can see better with them. :sunglasses:

These are my glasses, stylish or what?

I’m a tight git, i opted for the cheapest things i could get, they’re bloody disgusting frames, but no-one’s going to see me in them, so i dont care

My last medical was 2 years ago, and i got through that without needing glasses, and as i say, my eyes are totally fine, these are just to take the ‘strain out’ (his words) so i’m not sure if i have to tell DVLA about them as i dont ‘have’ to wear them, but then if they do help then i guess in a way i do have to wear them

I did do a search online, all i found was some article saying of you cant read a number plate from 20 feet without glasses, you should inform them

Years ago a mate and I used to have a pair of these glasses each. We would wear them when making our way back down to the trucks on the ferry. The faces of the other passengers was a sight to see, ranging from bewilderment, through shock to sheer panic. Funnily enough after seeing what trucks we climbed into they often let us go first while making our way off the ferry. :stuck_out_tongue:

There you go then, if you can read the number plate without your glasses then inform them you are not going to inform them. Sorted.

If you have near perfect eyesight I don’t understand why you would need to wear glasses, but anyway If you can meet the minimum sight requirements to hold a license without any form of correction then why tell the DVLA

The fact is that you don’t need glasses to see to the required level and as far as I’m aware that’s what’s important

You wouldn’t phone the DVLA and ask them to put three points on you license because you’ve exceeded the speed limit so why ask them to put an 01 code on it when it’s not necessary

I also wear very low prescription glasses out of choice because I was getting headaches and even though I have near perfect vision the optician said that, especially at night, wearing them would reduce the headaches, which it has. I haven’t informed the DVLA & my licence/digicard both have photos of me without glasses.

Just do what I do. Get an eye patch and rotate it between the left and right eye at 30 minute intervals. No eye strain, no glasses and no need to inform VOSA.

Don’t forget the beard and parrot so as not to arouse suspicion :sunglasses:

I wouldn’t tell them until my next medical, as long as you can see to the prescribed limits without glasses. I told them and it was the end for me. I got 01 code on all classes, so I have to wear glasses while cutting the grass now. :unamused:

My eyes are not bad but once DVLA have you down as a risk, they jump the gun. I can get it removed but till I get another bike I am not bothered.

OK:

So I got an 01 on my licence before I had my cataracts done. The new lenses are set for distance vision which is near perfect but I need glasses for reading.

What should I do about my licence?

Sorry I know it’s me being thick but I’m a bit confused about your post

Do you need correction lenses of any kind (contact lenses or glasses) for distance vision ?

i had 12 glasses last night.
i’m not telling dvla.
