Tell 'em to stuff it.
Isn’t normal taxi s/e job: gross takings, minus fuel used that shift, then 50/50 split?
I’ve heard the taxi trade has quietened off somewhat this past 12 months, but then rates have gone up to compensate.
I was shocked on getting one home the other night for the 1st time in ages, £6.80 i think it was, T2, just over 2.5 miles.
When i had my artic i had a job to get £1 a mile at 7 - 8 mpg + other humungous running costs. Average DERV taxi = 35 - 40mpg.
No wonder there’s guys running newish Merc’s on the taxis round here.
Do you work Fri/Sat nights till 5 am?
A guy i know asked me to do his saturday nights for him quite a few years ago now. I wanted a £100 out if it but it wouldn’t quite do it, so i declined.
If you are not working hackneys in London then you’ll struggle to make any money. That arrangement you are working on could possibly fall foul of IRS35.

That arrangement he is working on DOES fall foul of IR35. It’s illegal, no two ways about it.
TBH, he’d be only a few quid worse off on the dole with his rent and council tax paid. Basically, he’s working 70hrs a week for £176 after tax and stamp and without getting any holiday pay as well. If he were employed legally, he’d be on just short of £400 a week with 28 days paid holidays.
“Big ■■■■”, they’re taking you for a right mug. Tell them to shove it then report them to the Inland Revenue, HMRC and DSS, finally taking them to an employment tribuneral for the £200+ per week they owe you…
I would not recommend taxi work to anyone on here.I was self employed for about 5 years there are simply too many cars chasing not enough work, sound familiar anybody. My car used to stink of unwashed humanity was for ever cleaning and spraying air freshener and that was mainly on school contracts.Guess what Saturday night ■■■■ pots are like.Go on with Kleeneze or Betterware !!
I used to be a self employed taxi driver in Bradford Met (private hire) in 1989/90 I used my own car, I paid £50 per week radio rent but whatever I took above that I kept, on a Fri/Sat/Sun working the evening/night shift 16.00/04.00 I could take a minimum of £600 on a bank holiday more and on the one xmas I did it doubled, and you could add another £75/£150 for the other two days, and if you doubled the above I will never ever do it again.

My mate was the same as you. Came off wagons, bought a taxi and did pretty much similar to you. After 2 years of getting next to no sleep on a weekend , due to finishing club runs by 3am then having to be doing airport runs from 5am, and racking up 9 points for speeding he went back to lorries.
Currently driving a cab Mon-Fri dayshift. Easiest job I have ever ever ever ever had but downside is crap cash. Tips are v good generally and people are decent, at least during the day when I see them. I don’t meet the drunks in the evenings or weekends as I’m off duty by then thankfully (my choice as I have another job) but this obviously means less cash for the less desirable shifts.
It is not a career, that’s for sure as it’s v unpredicatable from day to day but I have done much worse jobs…taxiing where I work is clean, dry, stress free, no exertion whatsoever. You could do a lot worse condition-wise, obviously depending on who you work for. I drive an immaculate Skoda Octavia taxi, it drives very well and is comfortable…I can think of worse environments.
However, it’s not for me long term, I’d prefer an artic any day but the work/rates are not currently there, in my area at least.

Bad week so far my total takings since monday are £471.00 my cut is £188.40 i have worked mon to fri 12.00 to 0200 so far still got sat to go another 12 hours. I went to the dole office they said i would get £90.00 a fortnight because my wife earns about £125.00 pw . the housing people have agreed to knock my rent down by £14.80 so it stiil £ £77.46 pw Anyway i am due out on the road at 1400 so better go take a bath thanks for your coments
i was led to believe you pay the company you work for so much a week for the radio and you go out and earn and keep whatevrr your earn, whatever you earn you keep, minus the radio rent and your fuel…in some cases rent for a car, whats this about earning so much and only getting a percentage?..so your out earning for someone say 500 a week and they will give you say…250…providing your on target for 500?
that would ■■■■ on so many levels
Big ■■■■ i know you need the cash mate but you’d be better off working in mcdonalds. They are ripping you off.my mate has started doing taxi work useing there vehicle and he on a 60/40 split.he does 6pm till 1am and hes raking it in most nights clearing over £200 thats after them taking there 60%.he would be much better off if he used his own car but he says its worth doing it there way as his car is not taking the wear and tear and he has no maintenance costs except putting in diesel.he now only works 3/4 nights as this pays him a good wage.
I know times are hard for a lot of people at the moment and employers know that but id sooner swallow my pride and dish out hamburgers than fill someone elses pockets.Good luck mate
I am currently doing taxiing only to work around my young kids.I have to agree with everything scanny said ,its easy work and you can pretty much do what you want.My radio fee is 90 a week I work nights and to be fair in 12 months i have had no trouble(famous last words)At the weekend you have to put up with the ■■■■■■■■■ but i just think of the money fri, sat, nights i can take 400 quid easy and be in bed for about 3 in the morning.Only downside like most self employed is no money when your off on hols etc.I agree its not a career but it will do for now or at least till the kids go to high school which will be in 3 years and reading the posts on here and looking on the job centre website there arent a great deal of jobs going.Hopefully in 3years time the industry will have picked up again.
