Just go on night’s out, a full one for a day where you wake up and go to bed in the truck and a partial for the day you leave on a trip and the day you return.
Claim for showers, satellite radio, internet and phone, work clothes, any gadgets you have bought (GPS, laptop etc) cleaning products, laundry on the road, basically everything you need to buy while you’re out on the road that you would have if you were home every night.
Last year I did 219 night’s out and my tax refund is $6700ish, it should’ve been a few grand more, but I have other income from my magazine work, so I have to pay tax on that too and I did quite a lot of that last year, which meant a big tax bill

I’ve already figured the meal allowance thing out… I haven’t added the other stuff in. BUT, the other stuff isn’t going to increase my rebate by another $3000.
The only reason I am querying it, is because of the rebate amount that some other drivers claim to have gotten. Through just giving their logbooks and paying a few bucks!
I don’t have shower receipts (they are all paid for by the company), I don’t have satellite radio! The rest I never figured on, so no receipts there. Although it wouldn’t be too hard to work out.
That $3k is a big jump mind. I paid a professional the first year I was here and didn’t come out with a great amount then either.
Definitely driver error here!
you need to keep every bit of paper or have 1 bank account just for your expenses Ang. it’ll be so much easier to keep track on everything you spend on work …
Pat, heres a tip if it helps, if you go to the govt irs website and download form W4 you can fill it in with an additional amount of tax to be deducted, then give it into your employer. Also see if they can stop extra state and city tax as well if applicable. So by tax time you will have either no tax to pay or a refund. That’s what the wife ( before she got sick) and I done and I still do with my part time job. This year we got refund from feds, state and city.
Last year I gave my books to someone in work to do and walked out with about $5k this year have gone to H&R block will cost me bout $200 but worth it to get it done right
same as you taffytrucker been using H&R block since being over here as mine is a bit involved as I,m getting pensions from UK and cost me $150 this year and got refunds from feds, state and city, luvvly jubbly.

Don’t mean to ■■■■ on your chips, but the taxman is only giving you your own money back, in my case I paid $6500+ too much tax last year and now I’m getting it back
I like it as I’m able to live ok on my wages and I use the rebate as a savings plan, but I could do the same work this year and have $6500 less tax taken out and get no rebate next year, the exact same amount of money would go through my account
newmercman, agreed were only getting our own money back by stopping additional tax each week but if one can live on whats left that’s good, so when the big fat cheques come in it comes in handy. Been doing since having to pay taxes here, a savings club.

Kate is an expert, I have learned that over the years, she will claim everything she can and knows we are entitled to, right down to every pair of work gloves and every shower and meal away from home. She has already gone into the new W4 bit for next year.
We will get just under a grand back from the state taxes but it will be eaten up by the federal taxes.
