Tarmac tippers

No idea of the reg. That particular truck was up in the North East on loan from somewhere else (possibly Stockton). Was a twin headlight model though. My dad was based at Blaydon Sand Quarry for Tarmac and normally drove either an AEC six wheeler or later a Leyland Bison (I think). By then I was working myself and didnt have the inclination to go with him on a weekend. Remember the AEC Limmer one though XTN 597 H.

Oh,your dad worked out of a sand quarry did he mate ? Mine was based at Topley Pike quarry (originally owned by Derbyshire Stone) and usually did a load of tarmac to the motorways being built around Manchester, then worked the rest of the day from Agecroft works.I went with him a time or two,but he had an old ergomatic cabbed 4 wheeler.Think it was a Leyland Comet. The noise was deafening and the bonnet between the seats was red hot to the touch as the engine was just underneath ! :open_mouth:

Did your dad ever carry tarmac then mate ? I only ask as I always thought as a kid that the tarmac runs were more interesting and varied compared to the dry stone runs.

Yes it was all asphalt out of Blaydon. Used to lead dry stone in as well. Amazing to think when we arrived back at the plant, dad used to get out and go for a cup of tea into the weighbridge and let me (aged 14 -16) reverse the wagon under the plant, load it and drive it up and onto the weighbridge! Imagine that these days, he would have been sacked on the spot!! He was based at St Peters in Newcastle for the Limmer, then later, Blaydon Sand Quarry (over the road from Tarmacs), until the takeover.

I was far too young to drive me dad’s wagon when he worked for Tarmac as I was only aged about 8,although a few years later,he went working for Tilcon Trumix on a Foden S39 sixer concrete mixer and he used to let me drive that at the end of the day when he used to do the ‘wash off’.I used to take it up into the old part of Dove Holes quarry and just drive round until the water was discharged out of the mixer barrel. :sunglasses:

Found a good old colour pic on the net. aecsouthall.co.uk/dchalker/00_dc.htm

Have 3 b&w pics, busy uploading now.

Here they are,

Also, another asphalt company of the same era, was Val De Travers. Don’t know if they were just local to the North East though.

Thanks for those Bowser lad,I know they’re not tippers, but they’re very interesting all the same mate.

There was a Limmer quarry in the town where I was born,Buxton in Derbyshire.Although when Tarmac bought the company out, they promptly shut the quarry and transferred all the workers to other tarmac quarries in the area.So I never did see it in use, although my dad (and other drivers) have since told me about the tippers that were based there. The bulk of which were 24 ton Scammels. This was a limestone quarry that just processed dry stone with no asphalt plant.

The quarry has since been landscaped and is now a caravan site ! :open_mouth: :frowning:

Those trucks were called patching freighters and just did small repairs.

I have emailed one of my dads old friends who has an asphalting company in Newcastle now to see if he has any old pics. The 3 directors were all made redundant from Tarmac 20 odd years ago.
