i was tipping there 2006 and not much left of it. still have my old rhodia permit somewhere. i remember there was a black edition actros parked up there evry time i went in
In 2006 you and me both, used to do ten loads a week from Fawley (about 660 Km round trip) I did a load a day on days and my oppo did a load a day on nights so never got into a cold cab! When my night man had weeks holiday i used to do a week running from Lindsey Oil Refinery at Immingham for a change of scenery. When Inios/Rhodia closed had a spell of running to Runcorn then a few months of running to a couple of places in France but somewhere along the line Hoyer messed up and the France contract from Fawley went to a French haulage company and I transferred to Hoyer International (mainly lift tanks)
This photo brings back memories,I’ve been on and off that weighbridge many times in my career, day and night.Looka bit desolate there though.

I remember the shop CCC and also the canteen. It must have been the best paying job in Derbyshire when it was their own transport.I don’t think they had nights out at one time,Fearns used to do a lot of them. That weighbridge was open 24/7,I used to do two loads of benzene or cyclo out to Immingham and two loads of crude benzene back, washing out twice. That was a good shift and better to get an early start - like 0200 or 0300.
Who did you work for?
Chris.
Hi Chris, I worked out of Staveley for Fearns, Lambsons & Norman Lewis

I remember you worked for Lambsons and Norman Lewis but I didn’t realise you worked for Fearns, when was that? I was running in and out of Staveley from 1970 to 1979 for A.E.Evans out of the BTC plant and for George Bloomer for a few months in 1994.
Some more place you might remember from Staveley, although the first one was from around 1966 I suspect it would have been the same into the 70s
The benzole and simplex plant 1966
And the PAC plant, in 1974 (Malinkrodt now ?)
ROE LEIGH tanckers Blackburn got bought out by Norberts in the 90,s and now goes under the name CSH lancashire

Sorry got it wrong, cafe on right not left leaving Cadishead. There was another further back towards Eccles on left towards W,ton just after going under M63 (it was M63 then) in a big lay-by.Anybody remember it?Maybe it’s still open.Yes I remember the one in the lay by it was called The Caracafe if I remember rightly and it was a good un
That’s the one bigpeter, the Cara cafe.I’ve had some dodgy nights out on there as it was off the main drag and wasn’t the road all cobbled?
It was in the 60s and 70s so I could be wrong.
I remember The Caracafe, used it load of times during the 1960,s when i was driving for Smths of Eccles. waiting for police ■■■■■■ for my
wide load of steam elements 11ft wide and 50ft long to Fiddlers Ferry power station during its construction.
Then used it regular when i was early shift with Conoco Jet tanker work and meet the lads there for breakfast.
Our depot was at Bramhall Cheshire. Len Spinks. (cockney)
Earlier talk of LPG, not the best of quality,
The last of the Volvo’s, perhaps the mainstays of the LPG fleet at one time
And the last trucks seen in LPG colours maybe, a pair of Sed Atki’s

The only name that springs to mind is Alex (Jackson), I wasn’t really a sulphur driver as when I started Hoyer had just taken over the ‘Enichem’ (Later Polymeri) contract from TDG in 2000 and opened a depot at Fawley later moving to Marchwood. So I was doing nationwide redfleet work and from time to time being based at Reading (beer contract) and Purfleet (Esso lube & chemicals). But as always things change and after a couple of years we were routed by Huddersfield and it went downhill for us south drivers plus Esso lube at Purfleet closed so when my mate and me were offered double shifting sulphur to Staveley it seemed a more predictable rota plus the money worked out OK as well, the fact we had double shifted chemicals to S. Wales a couple of years earlier confirmed we would be OK sharing a truck. I wasn’t offered the 5 on 3 off and I didn’t want the regular sulphur shifts so I went on to Hoyer international mainly out of Tilbury, Dartford and Purfleet container ports. That lasted until retirement. Good memories of many of the lads at all the Hoyer depots. Have got some pics somewhere of a couple of us coming in to Dover with the sulphur tanks that took on my phone, must sort them out. Jake.

When did that happen? I have spent hours in that place! I even had a gate pass card for a few days

Don’t quote me but I think regular lube/solvent work ceased in 2005 although I have been back there to collect racing car fuel for the McClaren team in 2007 with a containertank for export, had to make an appointment to have the depot opened! Felt very strange walking around a deserted depot where a couple of years earlier you had to search for a parking place, and the going upstairs to the canteen that was totally empty and remembering the time the loaders would phone you there to move onto one of the loading bays.
spent 3 years working out of esso purfleet when mobil closed the birkenhead plant delivering lube oil before i went on to brit european transport.
