Hi Rikki
I worked for Smith & Robinson - S & R at Rothwell twice 3years (I was youngest driver at 23) and again at 32 years old for 16 years.
I became a driver trainer in 1974 and eventually Training Officer. I also worked for Harold Woods, Calor, L.P.G. TDG and trained thousands of great guys across the UK, Shell, Fina, BP, Hoyer, etc.etc.
I enjoyed every second as a driver and all the other roles, even LDOY class H -1st in Yorkshire 1970/1972 and 2nd in Yorkshire 1971/1973.
If anyone remembers me please accept my best regards and just to let you know I am still alive and kicking and in great shape at 76.alanwalker

Hi Alan, I am sure that you can’t remember all of the thousands of lads that you helped to get their Haz Chem and Haz Pak licences back in the 80’s/90’s but I am sure that all those thousands of lads will certainly remember you. Not only did you seemed to know your stuff but you seemed to have a great skill of passing on your knowledge to many drivers who had never been in a classroom since leaving school.
I hope that you have many happy years in your retirement Alan and thanks.
P.S. 76 Alan, if only you could of reached that score when you were playing snooker .
P.P.S. was that really a true story about the Swedish lorry driver who was sat in his cab cooking a full English breakfast while he was bunkering up with Benzine or was it just to get our attention .

I remember him telling us something like that Steve,it didn’t surprise me,I’ve seen some things that would make yer hair curl when on tankers.
I never got anywhere near 76 at snooker.

Errr would that have been a load of Peroxide out of Croda Chris
.
Which reminds me, what was the name of that place just outside Bratford where Croda had the big fire about 1990 ish ?.

Errrrr I think it was Allied Colloids Steve,I used to take methanol in there in the 70s.If it wasn’t them it could have been Cyanamid or something like that.IIRC they were both at Low Moor, one was near Low Moor Alloy Steels.
I can’t remember what Alan told us,it was something that was practically unbelievable that a driver would do.That Swedish driver cooking his snap whilst tipping/loading benzene could have been the one.

I think thou is reet Chris lad , it probably was Allied Colloids who had the big fire at their Low Moor premises and I don’t think that it was anything to do with a Swedish driver having his snap.
The making yer hair curl and the peroxide connection was a blonde joke Chris so apologises for that.
Did you or Sammy Opposite ever have to tip at BatOil next to the A62 in I.I.R.C. Milnsbridge between the Motormans Cafe and Huddersfield, circa early 70’s ?. It was a struggle to get up the cobbled street back onto the A62 in an A.E.C. Mercury when you were empty, especially when it was raining. I think that the StarDrops washing up liquid works was somewhere near there as well.
I bet Stuart Hall would know it .
Regards Steve.

Aye,a bit slow there Steve -peroxide and hair curling .
I think I went to that Batoyle place once,it was a job for a rigid and my motor was on MOT so I had a tilt cab AEC MM for a few days and I went in with 500 galls of summat.Coming out was a challenge with a trailing axle. There was another place in Huddersfield where they made Zoflora - still do in fact and their yard was all cobbled,I’ll bet it’s the Stardrops place you mentioned. Some 8-leggers with trailing axles would get stuck on a wet weighbridge when empty.
Hoss and cart places.
What about the British Belting Associates at errrrrrr Batley? Did you ever go there,a rayt good drop was that.It was next door to Fox’s Biscuits.

Steve and Chris Shaws Fuels had a depot in Milnsbridge and it was also the tank cleaning bay there when I first started at Sykes we did a bit of work for Batoil was it spelt Batoyle and another couple of firms in Huddersfield nearly all designed for the horse and cart another firm was at Slaithewaite on the A62 and I think that caught fire a while back and it was Allied Colloids which went up at low Moor Bradford we used to take Vam and another evil smelling solvent in there but it is 25 years since and I have supped a lot since then.
cheers Johnnie

Would VAM be Vinyl Acetate Monomer young 'un? As well as methanol I once took some ethyl acrylate in there from Canvey Island and that was an evil smelling solvent.I think Allied Colloids is still going,my young 'un flogged 'em some gear this year, bless him.
Like you I’ve supped some stuff since then, just to take the solvent taste away mind you.
Hi sammyopisite.
Would that be Grovener Chemicals you are thinking of at Slaithewaite/Linthwaite.that went up on the 24th May 2010.

Eh Lads, wiv supped some stuff tonight, as said wiv supped some stuff tonight I can’t remember who the Northern comedian was who used to say that but I am sure that somebody will remember him.
Sorry Chris I never went to the British Belting Associates in Batley, could that of been the headquarters of The Wife Beating Fellowship ( Northern Branch ) . I don’t remember Fox’s Biscuits but I did go once to the Coop Biscuit Works on Hazlebottom Road in Crumpsall where they made the Crumpsall Cream Crackers
. Tennants Chemicals used to have a place on Hazlebottom Road and in the early sixties my brother in law drove for Hansons Haulage who had a depot just off Hazle’s bottom on Slack Lane which was next door to I.C.I. Blackley.
And you and Johnnie were both right again , it was Batoyle, there’s nothing like a bit of local knowledge
Hi mushroomman
Tennants Chemicals are still trading on Hazelbottom Rd but ICI works at Blackley has long gone.

Tennants are still on the go in Birstall on the same estate as LPG and Bedfords. I think they had a place in Erith or somewhere.
Some of the Leylands i drove in the 80’s

Once you had been, you wouldn’t forget it, past the row of houses to the weighbridge, was there a canal or small stream to cross by bridge?
