Hi adr yes its a SA401 a reg ,it was to old for a new paint job,we had 6 at Margam and 2 411’s ,after them came the Stratos and then the ERF’s,the trailer was one of the first 38t oxygen tanks a stretched 32tonner.This one had a new paint job.

Now ,how would you “Tankermen” like to make house deliveries with these one-horsepower combinations ■■
Possibly easier to reverse if the motive power is directed properly.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Had to drop into our main HQ to the workshop in Worcester, my Scanny was the last 6 wheeler done in Cryo’s colours, here’s another new 1 I’m parked next to just having the flow-meter calibrated before it goes to its new home whichever 1 of our depots that will be! They all being done in AP colours now!

It’s been a fortnight since the staff at Claytons were sent home. Prior to that, they hadn’t been paid for a fortnight. Rumours had been rife for a long while.

claytoncommercials.co.uk/

I am not sure what is happening here, job vacancies?

I think that’s an old page, the website’s not been updated for a while now. The last I heard all staff are now redundant and the deadline for any prospective owner’s had passed without agreement with anyone. I belive there were quite a few intrested parties but suspect many were just looking to aquire the manufacturing equipment rather than resurecting the company

A great shame that another once great company fades a way, but things change quickly in this industry, they may be back yet

Have Suttons changed their buying policy? it seems that almost every barrel they ran was constructed or refurbed by Clayton. Maybe they would have been a good partner.

There were offers made by just two interested parties - both were less than half what the receivers were looking for. The place had been offered to UBHI as far back as 8 years ago, but they declined to make an offer after seeing how much capital investment would be needed to re-equip the factory for lift-tank construction. Given that they no longer manufacture road tanks (they were Suttons preferred manufacturer before Claytons) there was little point in moving for the sake of it.

There is apparently going to be an auction at Claytons in the near future - although whether there will be anything left worth selling is the subject of much local conjecture.

Thanks for that insight, it is a great shame for the area and for British manufacturing again. I am surprised UBH and the likes can compete with the far East just on demountables though.

Stephen J Tabner one of the nicest tanker fleets around at the moment a credit to Steve & his Drivers (IMO)

see tabs wagons a lot, either loading at picow or at johnson diversery, nice trucks

The Octopus…look at the size of the steering wheel, and who remembers that heavy duty ratchet hand brake? Wonderful photo, fine workhorse.
It needed a man, a proper lorry driver, to drive those machines, no frilly curtains allowed :unamused:…“What’s power steering?” :stuck_out_tongue:
