New Hydrogen trailers that will be coming from A.P. Holland to A.P. Didcot, Oxon regularly now. Trailer’s cost £1 million each :open_mouth:

My new Scania, one of the last done in our old colours, a couple of new ones done in our new colours now Air Products own us lock-stock & barrel!

Those trailers are impressive Chris, you’d want your moneysworth out of them, are they double-shifted.
Cryoservice is a Worcester based company I think?

Hi Chris, they are even more impressive when you get up close, very clever bits of kit. They will be bringing the Hydrogen over from Holland, Dutch drivers, in Liquid form, & being delivered as gas out of Didcot by British drivers. Yes Cryoservice are a Worcester company originally, we now have 12 depots in England, Scotland, Ireland, A.P. had part ownership of us, but in March they took us over completely, so now we are called Air Products/ Cryoease. I am the Supervisor ar Didcot, we run 7 wagons out of A.P.
Regards Chris

Well Chris,I’m entirely ignorant when it comes to gases - in fact some people say I’m just plain ignorant  - but I never knew Hydrogen could be carried in liquid form.
So the hydrogen is offloaded and processed into gas, clever. After conversion, how many loads of gas come off one trailer ex Holland?

To the best of my knowledge the gas is compressed and it turns into liquid, when the liquid is released it reverts back to normal atmospheric pressure and once again is a gas.
It is similar to the gas filled clear cigarette lighters which you can see the gas in, as soon as you flick the button the valve opens and the liquid turns back to gas and it ignites. I did a gas course at ICI and was told that the liquid will not burn.

1 gallon of liquid hydrogen will expand to make 113.4 cubic feet of gas.

I carried Vinyl Chloride on contract to ICI from Runcorn to Stavely and that was liquid until it was released.
The Vinyl Chloride plant was closed down at Stavely and we then ran the tanks to Baglan Bay until finally ICI stopped the operation and paid out the contract and bought tanks back off us. We kept the Trunkers but they were too heavy for general tank work and they were finally sold on.
I have a picture below of the tankers we had on ICI, it was Borrowed along with many others from Gilbraith by Mr Tuck and never returned.
I have scanned the photo from his book but if anybody has others of Gilbraith trunkers I would love to have a copy. It is one of the few I don’t have in my extensive collection.

The VC tanks were built to last, pictures below of possibly the same tank or range of tanks, mid 70s build, running up to abaout 10 years ago and now pensioned off and used for recovery demonstrations

Hi Chris.
Tankerman beat me to it, he got it bang on, the gas is compressed until it turns into liquid, then it goes through a vapourisor that is by the side of the customers tank & turns into gas, although it can also be used direct from the tank as liquid to blast freeze too! Good question about how much gas from a load, haven’t asked that question about the Hydrogen yet, as they still putting in the loading pads etc ready for it to start.

French A.P. Merc’ in Didcot today, pulling 1 of our old Brit’ trailers, this 1 still has its old Didcot fleet number on the rear of the tank L814, my trailer was L816. These were sent over to A.P. France cos they couldn’t be loaded up to 44 tons.

A couple of old photos that John Harrison sent to me a while ago which I haven’t posted before.

On the back of this one it says Shell Dennis 1957/58.

I was loathe to mention Wincanton to a proper gasman  They were not very popular in Hull.

A couple of lovely Shellmex motors there, well the damaged one was lovely. That damage looks fairly recent.

I found Chris Webb lurking on facebook earlier, or at least his old AEC

Let sleeping dogs lie, he was a grumpy bugger, but yes I did forget him :stuck_out_tongue:

There was the other old guy who blended the animal feed, he only had one tooth in the middle, he was a lovely bloke though.

you might be thinking of gordon malc with the limp and the one tooth he used to do the blending in the yard.
