Going to saltash tomorrow from bristol, not sure if i’ll have a reload further down on just come straight back, on the tamar bridge i believe its free going south but have to pay going north, is this correct? Is there a viable route to avoid it?
You only pay going out of Cornwall.
If you have to head straight back up from Saltash, going over the bridge is the most sensible way.
If you have to head further into Cornwall to load back, you can join the A30 at Bodmin to head back up.
A lot load out of Cornwall with China clay, either in bulk or bagged.
That’s down in the middle of the county.
Couple of big meat packing plants and veg packing companies (far West) load a lot of fridges away.

ive loaded bagged clay out of st dennis before, thats the furthest ive been down, went through the town and thought i was going to get stuck but didnt know how else to get there.
That would have been as good a way as any.
That whole area isn’t really much better for getting a lorry around.
If you do get sent down that way, don’t rely on sat-nav as there are a few roads/tracks/cul-de-sacs that don’t exist on the sat-nav.
There’s been a few caught out.

Fair play to you lot that drive there all the time, i bet its great fun if you know where your going. Yeah ok i’ll remember that, its the thought of getting stuck somewhere the truly puts the fear of god into me!

Corrected to read there are a few roads/tracks/cul-de-sacs that ONLY exist on the sat-nav lol

I agree with this ^ if you’re heading back in the direction of Bristol there really is no other way to go other than over the bridge, you can head north through Callington but it’s a jaunt to say the least but picturesque, be carefull on the bridge it’s a 30 mph limit with average speed cameras.

Oh yeah, I know that crap hole well, its abit tight with a truck in places.
And try not to sleep over down there as the locals will nick the teeth out of a hand saw.
Well im here, currently parked at saltash services, loading out of tamar ridge farm, cox park, gunnislake, in the morning then will be back to felixstowe, was going to head back on to the A388, then up to the A30 when i leave there? is that route ok for trucks as my firm prefer us to avoid tolls etc.

I stopped over in the quarry when i was there, i wouldnt have thought it was like that there
Yes you can head back onto the a388 at Callington and then upto the A30, definately the best way to go in an artic, the road is fine (for cornwall standards anyway!) or another option would be to head through Gunnislake town centre and onto Tavistock, and use the A386 to Okehampton where you will join the A30.
The latter option is shorter, and the road is generally ok, but does get a tad narrow in Gunnislake town centre ( traffic flow is controlled by lights though and I often see artics use this road) you then go over the Tamar on a rather small looking bridge. No charges for this one though Very pretty on the A386 between Tavistick and Okehampton too.

Thats the route I take back. Once your through Callington on the A388 just watch your mirrors as there are a few pinch points. Or if your good for time turn right at Callington through Tavistock and take the A368.

That sounds quite good actually, is it a fairly straight forward route going that way for someone who doesnt know the area, ie goods signs etc so i dont have to rely on sat nav?
Cheers again for everyones help, threads like these make a nice change from the usual rants.

Its not too bad that way, as said take care through Gunnislake and the steep hill just before the bridge. Its well signed, just follow to Tavistock then pick up signs for Okehampton. Bit narrow in places but ok, use it with 8 wheel wag and drag regular, nice scenic route

You’d be ok in the quarry but outside there are plenty of transit dwellers if you get my drift.
