Right I’m all set to fly out on Monday, now the bird I was dating in uk all of a sudden starts showing interest, suggesting that maybe she could come over when I’m set up and she could ride with me. I know that might have certain benefits to life on the road and I’m not totally adverse to the idea. But how would I go about setting that up■■?

Assumption: your bird is British, is healthy, is not a criminal, and hasn’t been barred from Canada previously for overstaying etc.
She can stay for 6 months as a visitor, but can’t work. She must have sufficient funds to live on for the duration of her stay and must have a return ticket back to her home country. If she doesn’t have enough funds to stay for 6 months then she may need to have a return flight booked sooner (or the immigration officers may not let her in at all) . If she “accidently” misses her return flight at the end of say a month, she will not be classed as overstaying until her 6 months is up. She will need health insurance as she is a non resident.
You can’t sponsor her for 2 reasons: you will be a temporary foreign worker and she isn’t your spouse. If and when you become a permanent resident you can sponsor your spouse (but not your girl friend)
Anyway, if it seems too much hassle, there are nice birds already in Canada and they love a British accent.
A few alarm bells would ring there for me lol. As said she could only come as a visitor for 6 months as I take it you’re not classed as common law couple. On a visitors visa they are a bit funny about constantly crossing the border so I’ve heard.

She is a type 2 diabetic which is dietary controlled not insulin dependant, no criminal record and never been to Canada before.
We were living together up until very recently when I started to get serious about coming over things cooled of lots and I moved out but as they say time is a healer ( and she obviously has seen what a great bloke I am. Lol )we had a joint account and the usual couple things
So would that have made us like common law?? And how would that effect things?
As common law she will be able to get her own open work permit for the cost of $150 BUT make sure you take proof that you have been living together for the last few months at least.
You would be considered partners in Alberta and she could get an open workpermit. As long as she’s not on insulin the diabetes isn’t a problem either.
I thought this was going to be a story about a middle finger being put in an inappropriate place ! Lol.

I thought it was someone taking the oath to become naturalized.
Ok so it seems she would be eligible. What happens next? Do I have to make the application when I get there, do I have to inform the anybody when getting my work permit? Or is it all down to her to sort out, if so what does she have to do?
The company you’re going to work for will know. In my case it was easy, she just had a copy of my workpermit and passport and with that got issued a workpermit when she arrived at Calgary. But that was 3 years ago and we are married.
She will need a copy of your work permit take that along with all the documentation she can lay hands on to prove you live together take all that along with $150 to customs when land at Calgary
Immigration in both the US and Canada take a sharp interest if someone say’s ‘I’m here to visit my boyfriend or girlfriend’ … They will be very concerned that she intends to stay.

As long as she’s got all the documentation Pat she should be ok.
Or go see a solicitor and get a certificate of notary
