Taking passengers

The company I work for wont allow it.Is thiz a standard thing now?
My daughter would love to go out for a day just to see what I do,its annoying.Does your firm allow it?

It’s more a small family firm thing. Anyone obsessed with health and safety won’t wear it.

Last firm I was at they allowed it providing you gave the company notice and the name of who was travelling with you, they did it for insurance reasons, it obviously was not an HSE concern to them. Some see it as a concern others see it as a nice thing to do.

Tell ya what mate; it’s eff all to do with insurance and more to do with overly promoted middle management meddling. The absolute basic insurance you can buy is third party. A passenger is third party, ergo they are insured. Don’t believe their ■■■■■■■■.

Even as far back as the 90’s passengers and dogs etc were banned from vehicles at our quarry. Conversley at one of the quarries a driver had his grandson with him and was told to leave the lad at the garage while he went to load, the lad went exploring and fell over something in the yard and was killed so would have been safer in the truck.

That was just my assumption mate, they allowed us to take any family members or close friend providing you gave them their names in advance of them travelling with you.

Absolutely right, passenger cover must be included in ALL motor insurance policies in law. I am old enough to remember the law being
introduced, some time in the early 70s I believe. Before that a lot of people were injured or killed while riding as passengers and the
insurers had no obligation to pay out as they were not covered, as they were excluded from the " third party " category.

Regards John.

My Mrs comes out with me regularly.
My boss is fine with it. Actually said that he liked the idea. A happy driver is a productive driver.
Also gives him some cause to expect me to be a little more helpful on the odd occasion…
She was out with me Tues and Weds this week.
She’s good company and even mucks in if she can.

I trust she wears hi-viz, safety boots etc when ‘mucking in’?

Am not sure quite what you are saying here. The issue is surely the employer doesn’t want a claim (or additional claims) that’s why they ‘ban’ it. So if your passenger claims it is an extra claim. No one wants any claims. If on the other hand it is a very nast accident one might argue that it is the size of the claim that could be affected. In that case sadly the size is irrelevant so far as I am aware. Never known an insurer bang on about the size of the claim just the number of claims.

Debatable subject for sure. Many Companies carrying a passenger is a no no unless he / she is employed by the Company or for the purpose of training. From a personal experience I had many years ago, young Family as passenger would a definite a no no.I used to occasionally take my young Son with me, with Company permission, fortunately at the time he was not with me when I had a serious accident in Grimsby where I put in hospital and was given at the time a 50/50 chance of survival I remained in hospital for 3 months.
What would my Son have done 120 miles from home with Dad fighting for his life. Dramatic I know but its the truth, and does not bare thinking about.

No offence mate I know you had a nasty accident and don’t want to argue or sound like I’m trying to take the ■■■■.
But that could happen if you took the lad fishing or the zoo. just the two of you in your own car. 100 miles from your house. Doesn’t really matter if its In work or out of work.

I had this when I worked at woodalls, they were tzlkinv about some accident that had happened and the passenger side of the cab had been dmashed in completly.I suppose the question is,hos safe is it to travel in a lorry as a passenger. Is it a high risk activity…

Full ppe.
Has all her own gear stowed in the truck.

If the cab has a passenger seat it has to be insured, passenger insurance has been a legal requirement for many years and a broker friend I have just checked with has confirmed that.
However the company you work for could have other rules and that is an option they are entitled to.
Way back when I was working my wife was my passenger when I had a run around Yorkshire and I could drop her off to visit her sister. (It was convenient that sis lived on a farm and lots of room to park!)
But the rule back then was that I should always let the boss know and it was never a problem, just a courtesy thing…
