Tag axles

Hi all, hope we’re all keeping busy! I’m looking at a 6x2 daf with tag axle. Being used to mid lifts, what’s the benefit/drawback of a rear tag axle on a unit?

Thanks in advance, Al.

To me the most obvious benefit is drive axle traction, presumably why Stobbies spec tag’s on their bulkers.

Traction in the slippy stuff is much better with a tag . The job I’m on involves quite a bit of off road work & so far I’ve had three Scanias with tags and never been stuck , then a year ago was given a new fh4 volvo with mid lift & it’s terrible , been towed that many times it thinks it’s a boat[emoji12] . Only disadvantage is that they do bounce a but more when empty , even so I’d have a tag any day .

Ok, cheers lads, that explains a lot. I’m not looking forward to the winter season’s site work now with the current 6x2 midlift!

More traction and easier reversing with a tag. But a bumpier ride.
