Stupid mistakes.

After spending a couple years saving for my licence, having it put off by covid, I finally got the chance to start training. 12 hours of “Training”(I’m sure my instructor is a good driver, unfortunately not a great instructor) later its time for my test. First questions no problem, only got asked 3. reverse exercise, No problem.
Off we go on the road drive, 30 mins in and all seems well. Then it happens, potentially the most expensive mistake I’ve ever made… Paid more attention to not hitting a bus in the same junction I missed the 7.5t weight limit. Instant fail…
Back at the base I asked the examiner if any other mistakes had been made, apparently no, no mistakes till the fail…
That another 350 quid on my bill and a 3 week wait with no driving before I can retake my test…

Lesson learnt, pay more attention to the school you are signing on with and get to know the area you are doing the test in…
Still back to the day job…

Did the examiner send you though a 7.5t limit and wait for you to notice?!

granddaddylow:

It’s a standard thing they do - asking you to “Follow the road ahead unless I tell you or signs direct otherwise” or similar words.

There can’t have been much wrong with the training you received if there were no other mistakes on your drive…

Just one of those things. The test only proves that on a certain day, on a certain route, at a certain time, with a certain examiner you did or did not meet the driving standard. It is a bit of a game. If you keep playing eventually you will win.

you only need to drive like a muppet till you pass.

Yes, that’s absolutely correct. Class 2 is worthless. It’s not even a real test. Everyone passes if you do it enough times. Just shove a rigid around without killing a pedestrian and you’ll pass, but you’re still not a “real” trucker.

Congratulations!! dieseldog999 you are now officially a SUPER TRUCKER. You will receive your golden d1ldo in the post that you can proudly display in your windscreen alongside your meerkats. We suggest you place it in such a position it totally obscures your forward vision.

And for everyone else,

Class 2 is a real test. The examiners know we’re all aiming for class 1. They are brutal. They are fair. They won’t try and catch you out. They will make you think. They will push your boundaries and knowledge.

“Pull in to the side of the road when it’s safe”… cycle lane on my left. broken white line…do I leave the cycle lane clear or do I use it?

Anyone who thinks or tells others class 2 is an idiot course is a liar.

It’s a real test. They know we want to drive class 1. I was was glad my examiner dragged me over the coals for my stupid minors. The examiner asked my instructor to come to the vehicle. My instructor was furious!!! after I got a ticking off for stuff he’d already taught me.

If you think class 2 is a given, best of luck stacking shelves or driving for Uber.

Sort of off topic but relevant, I trained in a pair of tracky bottoms and a black Tee shirt and trainers. I took my test in brand new boots, cotton trousers, matching Tee shirt and matching Hi VIZ vest. The whole lot cost me less that £100 from Dickies. It sends a very clear message to the examiner - I am serious.

Wouldn’t you send the same message to your employer?

I am really struggling to see how its the schools fault? sounds like they did a good job on teaching you how to drive the truck, and you missed a sign, probably never do that again in your life

Exactly, can’t say the school was bad if there were no mistakes except YOUR OWN mistake of not checking the road signs and paying attention.

Won’t happen again any time soon !

Calm down dear.

I’m sure you passed solely because of your cotton trousers and hi vis vest, OP should bare that in mind for next time round.

Or he could do his test, which is going to be stressful, in clothing he’s comfortable in. The examiner isn’t hiring you for a job and doesn’t give a ■■■■ if you spent lots of money on new clothes. He cares if you can drive safely.

With all due respect, you seem to be saying class 2 is a Turkey shoot and you’ll pass if you do it enough times. That’s utter rubbish “dear”.

If you go in with that attitude don’t be surprised if you fail.

As I said dear, it’s a real test. You can and will fail.

Maybe you failed half a dozen times so you think it’s some sort of lucky dip?

I didn’t. Because it isn’t I passed first time with a couple of minors. Why? Because I took it seriously.

The way you present yourself not only affects how others perceive you, it affects how you react in a given situation and how you perceive yourself.

I bet you think I’m talking rubbish. Ask yourself why firms spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on uniforms.

Like it or lump it, truck drivers are in the"service industry" we are no better than burger flippers at McDonald’s - we have customers that expect to be treated in a certain way.

If you think you’re not in the service industry best of luck.

And I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with the service industry. Smile. Be polite. Dress smartly. Do a good job. What’s wrong with that?

And no, class 2 isn’t a given. You earn it.

Next step - class 1.

And I’ll pass. First time. Because I take it seriously. Uniform and all.

Watch this space.

I do apologize to you all. I am in no way blaming the school for my fail. It was 100% my own incompetence.
My gripe with the instructor is simply the fact his way of training was simply announcing ways I would fail, rather than helping me improve. At no point was there any monitoring my driving to see where I needed improving, just constantly repeating the same things. example where to behind a car at a light(I at no point was too close, he just repeated) how to use a roundabout, even on the turn off to the test center he was explaining how to turn into a junction.
My first ever driving with no instruction was the reversing exercise on the test. Although I was fairly confident to begin with, it left me feeling under prepared.
As I said, it turned out to be unnecessary nerves, just my own stupidity that let me down.

I’ll admit to being angry when writing the original post. However I stand by my saying I will not be using the school for my class 1.

I will delete the post soon, it was made in anger.

you only need to drive like a herbert whilst doing your test, and only enough to pass.

surely an 100% accurate observation there ?

your driving was good. You can drive already so no need to give you a mouthful. Your instructor had faith in your driving thats why he did not say much. Chin up and do it. The examiner gave you good feedback.

Doesn’t sound like a prime example of skilled instruction tbh. But, despite that, you nearly made the grade. Sadly, there is no legal requirement for an “instructor” to be trained as such, let alone be qualified and registered. The huge majority of trainees assume that the person sat in the cab with them must be qualified. In as far as, hopefully, they have held their licence for 3 years or more they are technically qualified. And if trainees are happy with that, go for it.

I’m proud of the fact that all our staff are fully trained, updated, qualified and registered.

Not all training is the same. And nor will it ever be for as long as the current haphazard system continues.

There are 2 registers for LGV instructors. You can check out www.lgvregister.org.uk OR National Register of Instructors. Folks on these registers have undergone a rigorous round of testing and will have undertaken considerable training in order to achieve a pass. And this is repeated every 5 years relentlessly. Believe me, it’s easy to fail so it has credibility.

As always, I’ll point out that there are some very good instructors out there who are not on either register. That’s fine and up to them. But it is an excellent way of demonstrating their skills.

As always, buyer beware.

Mate,

What your post implies is the test is worthless. It implies you can drive like a pr!CK after you’ve passed and that’s absolutely fine and acceptable. It implies the examiners aren’t really assessing your driving but it’s some sort of numbers game and if you take it enough times you’ll pass. You won’t. You’ll fail every time with that attitude.

How many times did you take your class 2 until you passed?

Telling new guys to ignore examiners and trainers and “do what you like” is disgusting behaviour at best and typical cretin trucker behaviour at worst.

I’m guessing The Sun or pornhub hasn’t given you a link to the latest government initiative on the driving hierarchy?

Here’s some interesting reading -

motortransport.co.uk/blog/2020/ … laims-rha/

The days of the super trucker are coming to an end. Everyone has a GoPro or dashcam. The police will pay members of the public if you’re convicted from the evidence on their cameras.

Drive however you want? Nah mate. Those days are over.

Drive like a professional. You hold a professional license that proves you are more capable than 99% of road users. I am proud to hold my license. Other road users are not trained anywhere nearly as high as me. It is my DUTY to take extra care ( you could also read that as I have a duty of care to other road users due to my extra training and certification)

Or you could just drive however you want because you’re in a big thing I suppose.

Best of luck in your dirty trackies and bullying other road users.

Serious question - do you see yourself as a professional or is driving just something you do to avoid stacking shelves?

Roymondo:

Must admit, I’m glad I didn’t get the ‘self drive’ involving a weight limit with no warning or instruction.

I’m really surprised the instructors weren’t aware of this sign and practiced it a couple of times prior. Unless the examiner took him completely off piste from the route for some reason?

OP, are weight and sign limits common where you are? Did you practice them?
