Aspiring new trucker, I already hold a C1 7.5t licence (required for a previous job, I have done the theory/hazard/practical test for it, not grandfather rights) however don’t have a CPC card. I’ve been practicing on DTS anytime for a while now, watching youtube vids on it, and it’s just not clicking with me. I’m consistently getting high 70s % but not quite hitting that 80% pass mark unless I get lucky with the questions and only get one or two on times. I find I’m really struggling with all the driver times/EU times/WTD as there doesn’t seem to be a simple way to remember them and that’s what’s costing me a pass. I’ve got the real test booked next month as there’s about a month wait at my local test centre so figure Id book it and hopefully in the next few weeks it’ll click.
So my question to you is, how do you remember it all? Theres so much to remember, so many different numbers/times/regulations, Is there a handy system or mnemonic or some other way of remembering? Or is it merely just doing mock test after mock test until it’s drilled into you?
I also have a question about the Mod. 4 CPC, as I already have a C1, can I do the Mod 4 with a C1 truck and not have to re-do it for C/C+E? If its possible to get it done quicker with a C1 as that way with Mod 2/4 under my belt I can get straight to work with C1 trucks whilst on the waiting list for C training. Is it a case of a CPC card is a CPC card regardless of what vehicle class you did it on?
I’ve never done mod 2 so bear that in mind, but I’ll answer anyway.
Do you really need to learn GB regs?
WTD is easy, 2 rules
Can’t exceed working for 6 hrs straight without a valid break.
Workout total shift length and apply the total length of breaks. 0, 30 or 45 mins. For less than 6 to more than 9 hrs.
Plus also 60 hrs per week max with Avg. of 48 over 17 weeks
EU rules are simple too.
4.5 hrs, 45 min break
9 hrs except 10 X2 in a FIXED week
56 in a week
90 in 2 weeks
11 hrs rest except 9 x3 between weekly rests
45hrs weekly rest except 24 hrs every other week with compensation en bloc within 3 weeks.
I think that should be enough to pass - as long as no one corrects what I’ve got wrong? [emoji33]
You have to have CPC for C1 and that will be valid for C and CE without anything additional.
Could you have written the same as me off the top of your head? Or what is it in particular that you are struggling with?
It is arguably the trickiest test of the three. Most will pass with not much more than the 40 out of 50 required.
Read the case study twice before looking at the questions. Don’t overthink things. Answer from the perspective of the case study, not the question itself.
If you are unsure which answer, use process of elimination and then read the case study again. You may just find a small nugget in there that will hint or sway your decision. Some of them can be quite tricky - “what is the BEST thing to do?” None of the answers may be incorrect, but you need to remember you are answering from the perspective of the scenario being outlined in the case study.
We use TheoryRevision4All software (similar to DTS) and I personally think the revision material is more challenging than the real thing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Also, your CPC card will cover you up to CE, no need to do anything in addition if you upgrade your C1 in the next 5yrs.
I think its more the putting them into practice that’s the issue, whilst I can vaguely remember the basics the case study scenarios are so convoluted, trying to figure out what breaks John Doe is entitled to after hes done X mins of driving, Y mins of POA, Z mins of other work, which finished on Tuesday at 6 but hes starting at 9 on Wednesday. I think my biggest struggle sheer amount of figures thrown at me and trying to make sense of them.
Ive heard from people that the actual test is easier than the mock ones, but I don’t want to hedge my bets on that!

Worth noting that whilst the questions/case studies are random, they are trying to test you on the entire syllabus of the test. It’s highly unlikely you are going to be asked more than a handful of questions on drivers hours/WTD.

Hi.
I used the dts anytime subscription and the official dvsa guide for heavy goods.
After i done mod 1a and b i hamnered the mod studies on the dts anytime website over and over. The questions i got wrong i read the explanation for the correct answers. Everything started falling into place understanding each question for the specific scenario.
Well had my test today, and smashed it with 49/50. The mock tests & revision material are definitely much harder than the real thing! Didnt get asked a single question about WTD, and only one on driver hours which was “how long is a reduced daily rest period?” Frankly most of the questions were ridiculous with 3 clearly totally wrong answers, and I think I got asked about keeping revs in the green band about 4 times, and 3 times about why should you put a sheet over loose sand loads!
