This is the painting of a Liverpool tram by Eric Bottomley which I mentioned earlier. Ray.

Bedford train station.

Ray Smyth:
Hi Chris, Your picture of Wicker Arch brought back memories from long ago. Whilst I am not too familiar with
that area of Sheffield, I recognised it straight away. On the wall in the kitchen are three wall plaques of trams
containing paintings by transport artist Eric Bottomley, which I have had for about 40 years. They are Sheffield,
Glasgow, and Leeds. For a long time, I have been trying to locate one showing a tram and traffic passing under
the Liverpool Overhead Railway near the Pier Head, but so far, nothing.

Cheers, Ray.

Hi Ray,yes that is a grand painting of the Wicker Arches,I’ve seen it before.
The loco is a ex LNER Class B17 61626 named Brancepeth Castle and would have brought a train from Harwich for Liverpool, locally known as the “boat train”.The loco would return to it’s home depot which was March in Cambs.A Sheffield based loco would take the train over Woodhead into Lancashire. There is no overhead catenary in the painting so would be pre 1954.

R type up to 1955.Auto only on the S type after that.
Like the Wolesely 690 ? behind it, it had an awkward right hand gear shift lever by the door.
I’d have specced it with the the left hand drive type centre tunnel mounted gear shift.
Surprised how old many of the cars seemed to be early to mid 60’s.
