I’ve read in the paper about Stobart spotters, I believe that Jools Holland is or was a member of the fan club as are thousands more, but I’m curious to know how this affects the working day for drivers there.
How often do people take photos of your truck? Do they approach you to talk to you, do they cause operational problems, or are they something you just never notice?
I am a self confessed Truck Spotter… (sad i know)… …
but not got that many of Eddies trucks… never had the urge to take them…
Took this picture a few years back at Kingstown on my way to Barnard Castle Truck show… only reason i took it was because it didnt have a girls name yet…!!!
Anyway i went to the Truckshow and there was this guy with a stall selling truck pics… but it was all Eddies… got Talking to him and got on to the subject of the girl with no name… when i showed him the image on my digital camara the wee guy was almost having loads of white Tadpoles in his pants…!!!..
he asked me if i would send him the image by e/mail… when i got home… which i did … cant for the life of me remember the website name that he had… he said he would post it there… i have never came across it on any site apart from my own…
Btw … someone once told me the name that is on the girl …but i have forgotton it…
you used to see them sometimes sat in the central reservation at a busy roundabout just waitng for a stobart to come along, you would see them at times in kingstown ind est just outside stobarts yard taking picks as the trucks came n went, remember asking 1 driver if he ever got people coming up to him and if he did di he tell em to [zb]off, he replied that they were not allowed to and it was a sackable offence if you did and were reported for it. think eddie did quite well out of the fan club. does the eddie fan club still exsist?
They sometimes sit outside our yard and take photo’s or just note the fleet numbers, there are others that come in to the office and if they is time they are taken on a tour of the site. One family sits outside the yard from time to time, and they are all dressed in the Stobart uniform. Others hold up signs as they go past on the motorway and wave, or come up to you when parked and ask to look in the truck which have to let them do, which can be a pain when your trying to have 40 winks. If a new truck come in or one from over the water I have seen 40 or 50 spotters waiting to see it.
I sometimes work at the Newark depot, quite regular there is a guy stood outside the gate waiting for trucks to come in or out so he can take photos Even stood there one day when it was tipping it down and I was soaked from hitching up so he must have been too but still he waved and took photos.
I saw him once on my way into the yard and stopped in the road for a min while he took a few pics, think it made his day
i worked for eddie a few years ago and one evening i had just tipped at an rdc in didcot…i pulled out and stopped just down the road on the estate to do my paperwork.a car was parked just down the road and a couple in their 40s got out and came to the truck…the woman asked if she could take photos of the truck…she was a spotter…her husband just drove her about and read a book…they used to go to didcot every friday evening as it was a good time to catch eddie trucks…her hubby took a photo of me and his wife in front of the truck.
they started putting the truck names on the doors because spotters in cars would overtake…pull in front and slow down to catch the name when it was only on the front panel!!
drivers were told at induction to be polite to spotters…company image and all that.
when i was on for stobbies through an agency i always slowed down and waved at the spotters hanging around outside the gate. i was once in crick and took a load of pictures to put on here for the spotters. it was never a problem to me, i someone has that as their hobby then good luck to them, at freightliner we always have loads of spotters hanging around for the trains.
i wish i was passionate about something and had a hobbie instead of spending so much time on here.
i wouldnt say im a truck spotter, but give me a camera and ill take pictures of anything.
i dont get why folk want to go eddie spotting though, yes its a big company and yes he puts names on his truck. but i used to see about 5 or 6 parked up a day in tesco livingston and i just dont get it
I suppose the drivers get used to it, it was just like the buses, I used to notice the spotters but they become invisible after a while - used to like looking on Fotopic for pics of me driving and surprisingly there are a few, hell theres even a few on the same day, on the same run taken at both ends of the run

how the hell did you complete a run? you always spent your working shift on the hard shoulder or side of the road “broken down”

Yes i’m a Stobart Spotter and have been for 10 Years Now
Something else I’ve wondered is this. Are the trucks named after actual people? I mean, do people write in to have a truck named after their new baby daughter for example, or are they just made up at random?

‘… do people write in to have a truck named … at random?..’
Dunno, but if Eddie needs ideas , I can recommend ‘Ruth Elizabeth’ if he has a well-travelled jonah wagon that often goes off route, has a chipped grille, is a bit chunky, looks reasonable but is prone to wiring snags.
Or, maybe ‘Lynne Ann’ if he has one with labrador dribble on all windows, golden dog hair on the roof lining, etc and unruly kids high on E numbers fighting in the back.
Safety info? Both donor names have previously been prepared for rear-ending in an emergency
