Hello all!
Just been thinking of some little niche ways to get experience…
Has anyone considered delivering static caravans on class 2?
Or marquee erector/driver on 7.5tonne what’s that like?
Also is it easier to get work if I had my class 1 aswell or is it the same as having class 2 no experience?
Many thanks for help and replies in advance
Hello mate, I used to work on static caravan transport as a 2nd man though, this was way before I had my class 2 or 1. I’m not sure if there are any firms that would take you on as a newbie with that kind of work I know the firm I was on for wouldn’t. Personally I’m not sure I’d fancy that right off either A) manoeuvring with a wide load is usually pretty tricky on site and even many roads can be a nightmare to negotiate lol and B) their wage structure was pretty low and you made most of your earnings up with bonuses I.e. Each caravan delivered undamaged was a nice little bonus to add on to your poor basic and at the end of it a good experienced driver could do very well! But as a newbie it could prove tricky not sure just my view
As for the extra category I would say it would certainly open more doors it all depends on where you are and what firms you have around you but the class 1 would most certainly give you more options in terms of work available to you. just in the process of securing my 1st class 1 gig now hth. Ryan
Yeah I just spoke to a guy about static caravans and he said you need “balls of steel” because some of the caravans are 15 foot wide! Haha
Well my area is close to a major port with lots of trailers by the dock and lots of companies with class 1 trucks and class 2 is very few and far between here.
Yeah we were transporting mainly 12 and 14 footers but we did occasionally do under special permit and ■■■■■■ 16 foot wide and as you say balls of steel were required for a lot of the work. Not work for the faint hearted or easily beaten. I enjoyed the whole time with the firm though and it gave me some great experience.
That’s your answer then pal, sounds as though class 1 would be very beneficial to you. I couldn’t possibly comment on wether there are firms that’ll give newbies a shot but I’d imagine there would be
