Split shifts

How do the rules around split shifts work ? And does it affect the working day in regards to hours worked etc?

I’ve never heard of split shifts, do you mean split rests?

please give us an example

I’ve done split shifts in another sector (not transport), for LGV work it’s simple…
Either your shift pattern with split allows you to take the normal breaks, daily, and weekly rests required.
Or
You can’t do it and they have to split the job between 2 part time drivers instead of 2 part shifts.

I always refused to do split shifts as I could/would never go back after the first one.

So for e.g having the 3 hour rest period mid shift ? I don’t mean double manning . Cheers all

If you have a rest period of at-least three consecutive hours during the shift you need to have a rest period of at-least nine hours at the end of the shift, so the total rest for a split daily rest period equals at-least twelve hours.

This counts as a regular daily rest period, and as always with a single manned journey the nine hour rest period must be completed within 24 hours from the start of the shift.

Doesn’t affect the hours worked other that you can do shifts of 15 hours everyday, rather than just three times between weekly rest periods, when you have at least a 3 hour rest period during the shift. Everything else regarding daily rest periods, driving times, breaks and the WTD rules are the same.

Incidentally it is called a split daily rest period rather than a split shift.

How does that work then? 3 hour break between shifts + 15 hour total work = 18 hours leaving 6 hours in which you have to have 9 hours continuous rest.

The shift is 15 hours from beginning to end and includes the rest period. It’s not a break between shifts it’s, as I said, a break during the shift and is why it’s called a Split Daily Rest Period and not a split shift.

Ahhhhhh Is what I means is If I start at 5am I can have a three hour break during the shift which will allow me to have a full daily rest combined with the 9 hours at the end of my shift but I still can only work upto 8pm i.e 15 hours duty??

That’s right, the maximum is 15 hours from start of the shift to the end of the shift.

There’s the compliance guy going around saying if you take the three hour break in the day you can work an extra 3 hours at the end of the day :-/. I take it he’s not got his info from the ministry ■■

He probably got it from the the bloke most of us have met in RDCs, who always seems to have got it “straight from the horses mouth:smiley:

Because a split daily rest requires a total of 12 hours rest within the 24 hour period you actually lose working time not gain it

Thanks for that coffeeholic .
