If I put my card in at 0600 tomorrow, do other work and drive until 0615-0620 (drop&swap trailers) and park up say 0630 leave on break until 0930 , am I okay doing that or is there certain requirements I.e you need to be on shift a certain amount of time before I can have a split shift ? As far as I know I’m okay doing that but just thought I would get some information beforehand cheers

You can split shift after recording 1 minute of driving.

That’s fine for a split daily rest period.
For a split daily rest period you need to have at-least 3 consecutive hours rest during the shift, the 3 hours rest could start 5 minutes after booking on, then you need a rest period of at-least 9 hours after the shift but it must be completed within 24 hours from the start of the shift.

Your welcome.
And I’m sure ROG will be along shortly to also confirm this.

It’s always best to check if you’re not 100% certain, it’s cheaper than paying fines to

Aye good to know for future reference lol
And a small point, as you are going to count the three hours as rest you must be free to dispose of your time as you wish during that time, unlike just a break during the shift when it isn’t a requirement.
You must have a sleeper cab as well.

Oh yeah, copies of “Nuts”, “Loaded” hot water and fresh fruit too.

Rubbish. He doesn’t have to spend the 3 hours in the cab.
The requirement for rest for all of the 3 + 9 is the same - access to a bunk etc but I cannot remember anyone ever saying that the 3 hour part was ever checked on for that

We are not the only members who can answer Qs on the regs
Coffeeholic and geebee45 have probably forgotten more about the regs than I will ever get to grips with in my lifetime to give two examples…
ROG:
The requirement for rest for all of the 3 + 9 is the same - access to a bunk etc
Nonsense. The only time a bunk is mentioned in the regulations is when interrupting a daily rest period when using a ferry or train. Suitable sleeping facilities are required if taking a daily rest, or reduced weekly rest away from base, in the cab. No mention of a bunk or sleeping facilities for other rest periods.
He could take the three hours in or out of the cab and sleeping facilities would only be required for one of those options and if he is taking the second part away from the vehicle, at home for instance, the regulations don’t make any demands with regards access to anything.
So in fact the requirements for all of the 3 + 9 are not necessarily the same and are more likely to be different for drivers who do not night out.
Article 8
8. Where a driver chooses to do this, daily rest periods and reduced weekly rest periods away from base may be taken in a vehicle, as long as it has suitable sleeping facilities for each driver and the vehicle is stationary
What does that mean?

It’s pretty self explanatory ROG■■?
As already explained in my last post It means if you are taking specific rest periods in a vehicle then it needs suitable sleeping facilities. It doesn’t mean you have to take your rest period in a vehicle and it doesn’t mean the OP has to take both or either one of the two parts making up the split daily rest in the vehicle.
It clearly says may be taken, not must be taken. If he is not taking the rest in the vehicle then it doesn’t apply, which is why there is no requirement for a sleeper cab, as another poster stated, or access to a bunk as you stated when splitting daily rest. The word bunk isn’t even mentioned in the article you’ve quoted and it only appears in the regs with regard to an interrupted daily rest.
During his 3 hour rest period he could go for a walk, go shopping, go to the gym, go swimming, go for a haircut, go for something to eat or indulge in wild animalistic ■■■ with a willing young lady/gent or indeed all of the above but a bunk or sleeper cab would not be required. Well, naybe for the last option but not necessary with a little imagination.
Isn’t anyone going to mention that the bunk has to be 3 foot away from the steering wheel and you must be able to stand upright in the cab without touching the roof
