At least 25 people, including 11 children, have been killed when the truck they were travelling in overturned in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, the police said.

The driver and his assistant have fled the scene, police officer Praveen Kumar Parai told the Press Trust of India.

The injured passengers have been taken to a hospital in Aurangabad district.

Road accidents kill hundreds of Indians every year. Most are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles and bad roads.

The truck was carrying 35 labourers who were returning home after harvesting crops, when the speeding vehicle overturned.

A state government minister, Ramadhar Singh, has announced a compensation of 50,000 rupees ($914; £570) for the families of the victims.

Why highlight his race, surely if you wanted to highlight the incident without bringing race into it a better title would have been

First thing that came to my mind was Indian motorcycles. I thought, that’s a good effort to kill 25, I wanted to see how he’d managed it. Bit of a let down thread.

How do we even know the driver was Indian? According to the press report, he and his assistant bggred in the off direction straight after the crash. They might have been Bangladeshi, Pakistani or even British!

It isn’t a particular big deal for India

Road fatalities for a year sit at 133,900 deaths whilst in the UK it is 2,200. The USA have 33000 per annum.

133900 deaths not too bad considering the size of the population and and how most of them get about on the roof of a train or in Trucks designed for freight! :unamused:

No mention of drug use which is rife among Indian truck drivers, especially the long distance ones.
