Speed Camera vans

Hi, does any one know…Does a speed camera van measure your speed over a given distance and average it out, or is it a case of SNAP! yer nicked?

Laser, so within seconds it will have your speed

Point and fire mate…As easy as that

The laser measures the speed pretty much instantly (i.e. in a fraction of a second). However, the operator is supposed to observe the reading for a couple of seconds before he squeezes the trigger.

But no, it doesn’t work on an average speed over an extended distance.

There should be a separate company in charge of speeding offences ,the police can,t be trusted, and the money from the fines put back into road safety or improvement schemes. The speed awareness courses run by police friends and family are just a money making exercise…this stinks! :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

I got caught by one a couple of weeks ago 66 in a 60 limit I’ve been offered the awareness course £90 plus a day off work because they don’t run them at the weekend,20 to a class 2 classes a day 5 days a week, the cop must go home with blisters on his index finger taking pictures of all the speeders, then just to add a bit more to your bill insurance company’s now treat going on the course the same as points and increase your premium, failure to notify them will invalidate your insurance,o what fun being a motorist is,I have to admit that my opinion of the police has changed and if they think ime going to go up a kerb to get out of there way they can flick off

as you say, snap your nicked,i was and was about 60ft from a parked van

I think on balance I should be ok, I was doing about 35 but I saw him pretty quick and threw the anchors out…down to about 20mph.

This was on the Team Valley Industrial Estate. They may have been practicing in new places in readiness for when the speed limit out in the sticks becomes almost irrelevant to trucks. By that I mean there`s no real need to do more than 50mph on a A road…is there? !!! Revenue figures will be decimated.

With a camera van, they don’t even have to do that.
Once the camera is set up, the operator doesn’t have to move a muscle, if he wants to he can sit in the front eating doughnuts and looking out the window, read a book etc.
The camera system is completely automated and it stores all the data directly to a hard disc drive, even the operator does not know ‘who was caught’ or who was not caught until the HD is downloaded back at the station.
And yes, its instant. in a split second. By the time you’ve seen the van, its to late. Depending on where down the road the beam aimed.
A hand held speed measuring device is different and relies on its operator aiming it like you would aim a gun.

Thanks. Good info…

Didn’t know they used the TVTE.

My brother in law used to be on traffic in that area. I think I’ll ask him.

Ken.

Edit:

Kingsway and Dukesway are listed. Dukesway is almost to the yard where I had my accident in 2000.

Can you park up in a layby behind one for a break or do they have the powers to move you on? One camera guy had a spat with RAF security at Brize Norton for using the layby near the main gate. It says “MOD property”, is gated and at the time was being used as a holding bay for construction traffic. Camera van was making it awkward to enter the layby and was ordered to move by a persuasive polite gent with a rifle. Coppers’ face was priceless.

Then there’s the waiting room tale of the copper who pointed his speed gun at a landing American fighter somewhere in the UK and set off the planes’ counter measures because it realised something was “locked on and tracking it.” :sunglasses:

Let’s just hope that their not on the way to a member of your family on that day then.

It’s arrived!
Does anyone know if they wear surgical gloves when opening the letters?
Because I wouldn’t put it past some folks to give their backsides a good hokin’ before handling the form and sending it back.
Nasty!
