Speed Camera Van Operatives, are they safe

Driving down the A47 close to Hockering a week or two ago, one was parked up on the slip road into the village, and pulled up in front was another van, and what looked like the van driver was having a heated discussion through the peep hole window with the camera van operative.
Now I don’t know what floats the boats of these most upstanding public servants  , and I must admit I catogorise them only just above kiddyfiddlers. Its not a job I’d do, as they must be pretty vulnerable sitting alone out in the middle of nowhere, bricks, bottles, even arsonists come to mind.
I’d only gone another mile and two Volvos screamed past at well over the ton, no doubt on a mission to rescue their colleague in danger, so, do you reckon they’ve got panic buttons, and wear riot helmets, bulletproof vests and asbestos under crackers when on duty :grimacing:

Just makes me want to get some petrol and burn the van with the pratt inside it

yes they have panic buttons on there radios that they can use if they feel in danger, i wouldnt do there job either

No one is going to like them,me included, but at the end of the day, they are doing the job to earn a living, same as drivers, they must as you say get bored stiff, not to say cold in winter. If they cut the speed of the real speeding nutcase’s,fair enough, but most of the time, its petty 2 to 5 mph over the limit.

some people may say that about lorry drivers (not that i got anything against lorry drivers) but people have jobs to do.

I don’t think many of them are police, they are civilian employee’s of the various police force’s.

Possibly retired policemen topping up the pension!

just going on info i was given my cheif inspector thats a family member  we aint close

TV programme last night (don’t know which channel I was on) claimed that they are manned by traffic police on overtime.

that will be traffic cops lol that program that was shown is dated back 2006, now days there manned by police staff or an officer that is unable to fulfill the role of a PC on the front line.

As far as i am aware I pay rates to pay the police to protect me and my family. If they are unable to fulfill the roll of front line policing as you say, get shut of them. It happens in every other industry

i know what you mean but it’s down to injury etc. i should of made it clearer

civilians do it (traffic PSCO’s) and there on normal time, there alot cheaper than paying a bobby to do it. (no over time in the budgets now.)

forces tend not to send bobbies on restricted duties out (for various reasons) they find them station based jobs to do instead.

Have been known to cut it tight when there in a layby (obviously doing 30mph) just to give the van a wee rock  just to keep them awake :grimacing:

in some area’s yeas but in other areas it is police staff

Just as a matter of interest, was this speed trap near a school at a time when there were kids around or perhaps in an accident blackspot? I’m guessing it was in a sneaky spot that would attract the most revenue, but I’m just an old fashioned cynic.

now i’m not here to ruffle any feathers as we’re all professional drivers, but the view here should really be , if we drive to the speed limit , it doesn’t matter if the vans there or not ! if every one drove to the limit , they wouldn’t be there & the operatives would be safe

1 day youll do that and mis-judge it. Id hate to think of the resulting carnage.

Safely stood in the queue at the jobcentre…signing on
