Nothing changes over the years does it? This was what it was always like on the upper reaches of the M5 before they put the 3rd lane in.Flipping Welshmen getting under your feet, creeping like snails, gasping for breath!!! We used to āsailā up behind them in the 8 wheeler and trailer and there theyāed sit, fast a sleep, and baulk you!!! We were more than likely loaded for Carlisle and then had to run back into Barrow the same day!! Those āheroāsā were probably only going to Longbridge then back M/T to South Wales!!! It was usually quicker to go over the Brecon Beacons, which we normally did!! Keep your elbows in Taff!! Cheers Dennis.
No response as yet on āthe case of the S.Wales M5 lane blockersā probably because all the posters on the thread werenāt around during the dayās Iām referring to! I know Iām āpast itā but I can remember when the M5 was two lane and ran from south of B/ham to the M50!!! Cheers Dennis.
The M5 didnāt go below Tewkesbury when you were driving that Leyland Dennis,we were still hauling to the Tewkesbury to Bristol section that was the last part to be built in 1970.I bet you didnāt scalp many of Sam Longsonās over Brecon Beacons .
Cheers Dave
I only drove it a couple of times from the top of the M5( 1966/7) to Strensham services, both times after weād been in Leyland Motors at Oldbury for running repairs it was also in the darkness of early evening as I was only 19/20 at the time! Talk about āa dog with a bladder full of ā ā ā ā and a street full of lampostsā!!! Cheers Dennis.

I used to run back from Tewkesbury Dennis,up the M5 to Strensham and up the M50 and off for Ledbury, much quicker than all the A roads, always tried to get back for another load,to make more money for my boss !!! .
Cheers Dave.

sorry dennis mate,i was only a baby then.i guarantee 100% that nobody could accuse me of holding up traffic in my texan atki
Hiya Andrew, The time Iām on about was when all the S.Wales firms ran mainly 150 and the new 180 Gardner engines so the 200 BHP Power Plus could walk all over them up the M5 grades, provided ,of course, none pulled out doing 20 mph to pass his mate doing 19.5 MPH!! Then my mate Eric used to get really āā ā ā ā ā ā ā with two of John Raymonds blocking our rapid progress!! No doubt your āBig Rigā would ā ā ā ā over all of us now!!! Apart from OJM 480L,of course!! Cheers Dennis.

Andrew you wonāt believe it, I was on my way home to Caerphilly about 3.30pm on the M4 from Bridgend . I saw it coming in my mirror, flew by my little 7.5t Daf going like hell. Heās from Lancs, it looked brilliant. Two old ones in a week.
Hello Andrew
If I not mistaken the area where the crusaders are is A10 offices and the tunnels in the mirror of the lorry are now loading/unloading bays for the pickle lines and 5 stand mill . The spot where the marathon is parked is now used by hazells to park the two internal daf 95ās (6x4 units) when not in use , that pull coils on purpose built trailers around the plant up to 5 at a time. I used to have an office on the corner of the building behind the view of the photograph.
Keep up the good work with the thread.

Hello Andrew
Iāll have a look for some of my old books and see if i got some of the old registrations/ notes I used to make⦠Been in Llanwern since leaving school in 1982 , worked in most of the departments and still there !. Malta is a no for the show this time so its down to you and the boys to find some old gems. but I hope to be out for the change over with the public transport on the 3rd of july.
The family has told me to make the effort to do something with the transcont this year , I still got it but rarely have the time to do much. Must make the effort.
Tony, you should definatley do somethingāwith the Transcon. Get it sorted and around some shows. Youāll get plenty of support from this forum.
[how about some pictures of it? It is afterall very much a South Wales truck isnāt it?]
Neil.
