Coincidently, both those are still going and both using Daf Super Space cabs.

Spotted these from Prices loading scrap rails in Somerset a couple of years ago.

ahhh, funny you should mention that, as i was about to post this image of the aforementioned cliff ashley standing on top of one of margam’s fine 26 tonners.the story behind it is that long serving shrewsbury driver geoff passant (now deceased)was heading back to hanwood one thursday night when, believe it or not travelling at over 50 mph in the dark he rounded a left corner and the 26 tonner went right, down the bank and as i recalled demolished a gazeboo.when i turned up every well board each weighing over 70kg.had been flung off the trailer also.on the following sunday a gang of us and two mobile cranes turned up and removed the coil from someones garden.anyone who know’s the “back road” as south wales steel drivers did and still do were astonished that geoff could do that speed on that road with a 26 tonne coil on…some of the time!r.i.p mate.

hi all,
cliff ashley, joint motorways shrewsbury foreman recently celebrated his 80th birthday.congratulations mate.cool ice sculpture.

hi neil,
a stupid question i know  ,are these sculptures created using a cnc robot type machine.the detail is first class which leads me to say this.bloody shame for it to melt really    .
regards andrew.

Individually hand sculpured I believe. Craftmanship is still alive.

Neil, as you say these ice sculpters or artists are true craftsman. More years ago than I care to remember, whilst working for Thompson holidays myself and good friend Beth S from Porthcawl ( Andrews school friend), worked the Disney hotels.
These guys/girls would start with a block of ice and turn it into any animal etc you wanted them to. Nice but boring.
That Joint Mortorways motor is spot on. Craftsman, real people, great memories, old fashion values. Hard work, hard guys/girls. To reach your 80th birthday as Cliff has shows that road transport is not detremental to your health.
Nice one Cliff.

Andrew, the tools used can vary from chain saw to old fashion file. To see one from start to finish is incredible.
As you say its a shame they melt away.

Regards Paul

hi paul,
thanks for that.i was amazed at how all the lettering was so perfect, that’s what made me think of these cnc machines that are everywhere now.fair play if that workmanship is done by the human hand,i am impressed  .
regards andrew.

Wouldn’t I just love one of those Port Talbot/ Llanwern T- shirts.

pete 359:

Looking at the lettering possibly done with a small hand size grinder. Some of the tools are similar to those used by a dentist, to create such detail.
This is a one off sculpture, probably copied from a drawing or photo. Must admit it is perfect.
Andrew, I would think a large number of the same design could be done on a cnc milling machine for use at various themed functions, and the template being used many times would reduce the cost. Come to think of it with computer aided drafting they can produce detailed drawings of anything. Castles and animals nice, lorries superb.
