Hi Neil, glad she passed first time. As a teenager used to ride down to Pontypool with my father or cousin to put our motors through their test. Remember pulling up to the gates , doing a smoke test, checking the clearance on the brakes and then wiping any trace of oil off the sump or anywhere on the freshly steam cleaned chassis. Your heart would beat twice as fast going down the lane, hoping you would get the all clear.
Quite a few years later, working for Henly’s of Wembley (Bedford dealership) used to visit Yeading Lane in Hayes 4/5 times a week. Different feeling when its not your motor, but the thought of a failure would still hurt.
I was called to Pontypool when I had my own trucks, the second of which I had to present with all the Tacho’s and maintenance records. A 2035 6x2 sk Merc E111 BVO which flew through the inspection and got me a pat on the back for a well kept truck and records. I must admit I left there with a smile on my face that day.
Before emmigrating, I took all of Gulliver’s Cardiff motors to LLantrisant, never had a failure there, but that was because we had one of the best fitters on the job. I would come in and tell Allan we had a failure, he would go nuts until I showed him the pass certificate, some how in those days it was a personal thing, don’t know how it is these days though.
Visits to the test station, road tests and break down call outs, great stuff.
Nowadays I drive 580 miles / day 4 days a week. I hate to admit it but just a steering wheel holder, line - haul Orlando/ Dallas relay as boring as could be, but it pays the bills.
Thank goodness for this site LOL.
Regards to all Paul

Anybody remember Roy ■■ from down west, who bought and ran a New orange F12 Globetrotter back in the early 80’s and pulled for Gap. He used to do a lot of Italy with his “secretary?bookeeper” and sometimes ended up in Germany with Ford engines?

Hiya Andrew,we ran 5 including one that K. Fell’s had when we took over. They all had the D85 Kirkstall HR axles and from memory I don’t think we experienced any serious trouble with the axle, may have had the odd seal but I was always closely involved with the workshop and nothing “clangs” any bells !!.When I started buying the B & C series I had them all built with the heavy Eaton single reduction axle. Got a bit of gentle persuasion of ERF’s to take the D85 but I stuck to my guns,no Eaton no orders and ,of course,Scania had made massive in-roads into the fleet by this time so the writing was “writ large” on the wall !! Cheers Dennis.
any of you port talbot lads remember john litchfield?he ran a few of these mercs.i can’t remember when he finished though
