Don’t think Mrs Cooper would go for your explanation of but this ones got a differant engine and gearbox dear, storage would be ok as you could work a system of one in the bodyshop and one at the house.

hi neil,
if i bought another,i would have to live in it

when i was a kid i remember ironrails running marathon’s,then later roadtrains.

i was amazed that jeff had owned the truck so long, yet i had never seen it.

Both trucks are nice, fair play neither are OTT but oose personality.
These days over here they are either plain Jane or tricked out like a poffs parlour.

Nice picture. Whats the story with that one Andrew?

hi neil,
she’s a 1992 extended hood 379 peterbilt, powered by a sweet sounding detroit.i took her out and gave it big licks  and she still wanted more :open_mouth: ,jeff bought it three years ago from the owner of a bodyshop in kent,he had imported it from the usa in 2004.

Hiya Andrew I hope you won’t have set the “bold Carryfast” off with telling the site that the “other” Welsh big rig has a Detroit Diesel under the hood!! Can you imagine the scene----- “Carryfast” will be slouched in his chair drooling at the screen with his d**k in his hand and a glazed expression on his “clock”!!! You may have a lot to answer for shortly Mr. C. Cheers Dennis.

If I have anything to get past customs, I either tell her I have borrowed it and forget to take it back, or tell her you won it in a raffle in aid of starving children, its worth a try

Question Andrew is the Detroit a V or a Straight engine? Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
this particular detroit is an inline six cylinder.though as you are probably aware, they regularly fit v8’s and v12’s in all north american class 8 tractors.

Andrew, depending on the year of manafacture this Pete as either a 12.3 or 12.7 L straight six. The series 60 as it was known started as a 11.1l
around the same time as the ■■■■■■■ L10. The new world series Detroit 13 and 15l are the engines being used now 2010 onwards.

Its been many years since any of the Vee engines were used in highway vehicles.

hello paul,
thanks for clarifying that mate.i did wonder as i know that caterpillar have pulled out of supplying truck engines totally.which is a shame after so many years,i am led to believe they are/were the number 1 fitment in the usa?would you say that was right paul?
regards andrew

Hi all
Has anyone mentioned Stephens & Chambers Brecon. They ran dodge tippers in the 60’s when I worked there. Also Harry Kelly of Crickhowell ,Guy Big J,s. I worked for Entress Tsp. Swansea 69-82.

Andrew, great question regarding CAT engines. Both 13 and 15l engines were sold to loyal customers from dump truck operators to over the road fleets such as Freymiller. Peterbilt operators seemed to favour CAT engines over the Detroit or ■■■■■■■■ However after CAT announced they would not build on highway engines to meet EPA 2010 emissions, the Detriot picked up the sales. Between Peterbilt and Kenworth, Paccar probably were CATs biggest customer.

Regards total engine sales, it would need further research, as the series 60, ■■■■■■■ N14, M11 and ISX gave CAT a run for their money in the 90s, and in the last 10 yrs Volvo brought on their own engines.

Today, Paccar are building and using their own MX13, (Daf) with the ■■■■■■■ ISX as an option, Volvo using their own D13 and D16, again the ISX an option.
Freightliner have their own Detroit 13 and 15l, I am not sure of their option but it would be logical to offer the 15l ISX. Each truck manafacturer have their own engines and do not want to fit a competitors engine to their chassis. U.S. truck manafacturers are more intergrated these days, two owned by European companies, Volvo and Freightliner ( Merc),the third Paccar owns Daf.

The outsider who were also a big CAT user is International (Navistar). They bought the CAT on highway engine business and use the 15l block, along with the D24 12l block off MAN. They are the only manufacturer offering EGR for 2010, but in the not to distant future may well buy ■■■■■■■ and then they will all have their own SCR engines, with no options.
Just as ■■■■■■■ pulled out of the heavy engine business in Europe, CAT were forced to do the same in North America. In their time all these engines were good, but as we all know you have to change and invest to stay in the game.

Regards Paul

Hi Jezz, Yes i remember Chambers very well they as i recall they also had a Guy warrior 6 wheel tipper ; and in latter years ran a few Atkinsons including a twin steer artic. Most were supplied by Prails of Hereford and had Herefordshire registrations , some of their work was from quarries in the Swansea valley.
Hope this is of interest Brecon has never featured much in truck circles. Regards KK

hi paul,
thanks again for the information.a truck dealer friend of mine, who knows the score, told me that the engine merc use in the tesco spec.axxor is a direct copy of a detroit that is used these days in the usa.this is another example of manufacturers cutting their design/manufacturing costs.
