South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Hi boys
Im I right in thinking there is a Shepards on Liverpool dooks where they load the boats for export?

Regards Keith

Desert driver…You may be right i do’nt think that scrap yard is in Manchester anymore,I picked some parts up near their about 6 months
ago and i remember looking as i came past.I have a story about nipping in that yard to check the weight of a 19 ton container. The weigh
bridge man told me to get off his bridge quickley. The box had come from Hull and was going less than a mile down the road.We was only on
4 axels in those days and i would of needed about seven.

cheers

John.

Hi Andrew ,hi keith
Keith first yes they did Shephards did have some thing at the docks in Liverpool but I didn’t go there.Apparently they had ther own ship too !!Andrew yes i went to the scap yard at Rochdale it was the same firm as the one in Rochdale . After about a month of doing nights for Joints Alun said he had got a special job for me !! My job was to tip in shotton , Widnes , north west etc then go too load scrap for joints at Shephards in Manchester. Billy, I can’t remember the girl that worked for joints and a few more Welsh drivers came there. It was mostly for the Shrewsbury drivers. , some times the day drivers but mostly the night drivers. I even had a key too get in there so after I had tipped at Blackburn I could get in there have a nip before I started loading the scap on the trailers. It was a ■■■■■■ place when it was dry there was dust every where and when it was wet it was a bog !! But the people there was nice and I got on well with them. I don’t know if the place is still there now it was in Ardwick about a mile from Manchester city centre.

Can any one tell me If Shephards are still going in either Rochdale , Manchester or Liverpool ?

Mercman123…I have just had a look on google earth and there dos’nt seem much is going on at Manchester yard.I think you can see a machine
but thats all and a couple of small piles(they could be bricks).I never went to the Rochdale yard so not shaw where to look. When i was
doing scrap it was from Shotton (which is about 3 miles from where i live now)to Tinsley park… locals around Sheffield (Walter Hesslewood)
and 3 loads of cast a week to Bangor, That put me back into Shotton .I lived in Leek so i was home every night that job lasted 3 years.

it’s my understanding that they along with scrap giant giant cooper’s and several others all became emr,or european metal recycling to give it’s full title.i don’t think any of sheperds former yards are still in use?
regards andrew

Ok thanks John and Andrew. Its been 14 years since I was up there so I’m not surprised that they have gone or have been taken over. I was there for 2 years, sometimes it was good sometimes bad .
