South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

‘Haven’t I bored you enough with Wynns photos, over the years ? Ok the Pacific they ran were all, largely built in house at Newport, though Diamond T,Ward La France and others they had Were sent over for the second world war and never went back…’

Wasn’t it part of the lend/lease agreement that the Diamond T’s etc. were to not go back to America after use in order to not affect the home truck market for US truck makers?

The RAF were using Ward la France units late 50s to pull Thor missile and nitrogen trailers, borrowed off the USAF. The RAF MT drivers I spoke to didn’t like them and preferred the Leyland Hippos which arrived a bit later.
The Hippos would do RAF Feltwell near Thetford to BOC Bilston return and refuel just the once, the USAF units required dieseling up two or three times,RAF Cottesmore was one refuelling stop I remember.
The USAF units all had RAF reg plates so as not to upset some of the locals who didn’t like the idea of Americans with nuclear weapons in Eastern England. Most locals welcomed the Yanks who provided civilian jobs on their leased bases, like Sculthorpe,Mildenhall and Lakenheath to mention just a few.

Hi Harry,
One of the comics ran a feature about Wynns a few years ago and Wynns motto was " No job is considered impossible… it will just take a little bit longer"!
Your comment would certainly be true of Wynn’s, I have witnessed many a load going north out of Wolverhampton, loaded from Thompsons, on the A41, they would stop at Newbridge and drop the “pusher” off the back and inflate the airbags to cross a canal, railway and stream bridges all with-in 100 yds of each other, then couple the pusher back on and have a dead start for the climb up the rock. On the real heavy loads they would have 2 at the front and one pushing, the extra Scammell used would have come from Stafford depot as it would come back down solo 30 after turning around at Tettenhall bus terminus, the A41 was pretty flat from then on to Chester.
I lived 30 yards from the A41 so could be down there in a flash! Great childhood memories, Cheer’s Pete

I notice a Knights head and a ■■■■■■■ badge on the grill, I had a pair of Les Routier stickers on the Transit I drove, I never went further than Chester in it!

John,
I used to deliver to a farm at Temple Grafton near Stratford on Avon and there was lad who specialised fitting 6 pot York Diesels in to Range Rovers, I think he also fitted some with Merc diesels.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for sharing the images and information.A few random welsh motors. The RSE Actros is Courtesy of Chris Richards…

Hi all. Andrew if your A series was like ours it was thirsty for diesel and a pig to start when cold. I can’t remember the GVW it was plated for, somewhere in between 3500 kgs and 7500kgs I think. I only did a few trips in it, sold it off and ran an ex Wales Gasboard Leyland Terrier. The Terrier was a good motor.

Only 2 things wrong with those York engines Paul, hard to start and when they started they was useless!
